What are the responsibilities and job description for the Computer Operations Technician position at South Dakota State Government?
This is a Full-Time 40 Hours Weekly position with the Bureau of Information and Telecommunication; Data Center. For more information on the Bureau of Information and Telecommunication, please visit https://bit.sd.gov/.
Incumbent will maintain computer system operations by monitoring the master consoles, releasing production jobs, responding to master console messages, supporting problem calls, and determining and responding to equipment problems to ensure efficient computer room operations.
New staff in the position are assigned a mentor and provided: hands-on, written and verbal training support during the 6 month probationary period as part of a formal training program.
Incumbent will be initially assigned to the third shift however; incumbent may be assigned to work on any of the three shifts while in this position. First shift is 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, second shift is 5:00 pm to 12:30 am and third shift is 12:30 am to 8:00 am. The computer room is operated 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Incumbent will be required to work some holidays and weekends. Work will be performed in a large computer center that involves exposure to noise and prolonged periods of standing and viewing data over a computer terminal.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Knowledge of:
- general computer concepts and operations.
Skill to:
- prepare and maintain a sequential, written record of activity performed on a shift;
- accurately interpret computer-issued error messages and take appropriate action;
- operate all computer center equipment;
- communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to:
- establish and maintain effective working relationships;
- stand and/or walk for extended periods of time;
- read and respond to messages scrolling across a computer screen;
- follow safety rules when handling chemicals and mechanical equipment;
- work effectively with deadlines during periods of high work load.
This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
