This position is responsible for the surveying, monitoring, and capturing of big and small game including, but not limited to, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain lion, sage grouse, mourning dove, and waterfowl. The incumbent will be required to conduct aerial, low-level surveys in both fixed and rotary wing aircraft.
Day-to-day duties will require the incumbent to work early mornings and late evenings in sometimes inclement weather and remote areas of the state. Other responsibilities of the position may include telemetry, chemical immobilization and handling of big game, and public interaction through public meetings and presentations.
Job responsibilities require a flexible work schedule that may require work during weekends and holidays and occasionally require travel away from the duty station.
Applicants must possess, or be able to obtain, a South Dakota Commercial Applicators license for control of rodents (will need a general applicators license and a category 12 license).

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A bachelor's degree and experience in wildlife/natural resources management is preferred. Certification in wildlife chemical capture and handling and experience in fixed and rotary wing aircraft are also preferred.
Knowledge of:
- life history and habitat requirements of wildlife species in South Dakota;
- techniques for capturing, marking, and monitoring various wildlife species;
- techniques used to survey wildlife populations;
- techniques used to sample habitats used by wildlife species;
- techniques, equipment, and software used to construct Geographic Information Systems.
Ability to:
- collect, compile, and report scientific data;
- prepare and present informational talks to peers and the general public;
- accomplish work tasks both independently and as a member of a work team;
- independently arrange work schedules to accomplish tasks in variety of areas of responsibility;
- communicate effectively;
- work well and interact with other wildlife professionals and the public.
