Summary:

The job of INTERPRETER-ASL is done for the purpose of assisting teachers and students by adapting teachers’ lesson plans to relay necessary information for students to gain subject knowledge.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Adapts teachers lesson plans for the purpose of relaying necessary information to gain subject knowledge;
  • Consults with staff and parents for the purpose of advising teacher and parents of expectations, abilities, and adaptations for students;
  • Collaborate with the certificated teacher in order to lead, guide, and/or coordinate students;
  • Interprets spoken language to sign language and reverse for the purpose of enabling students and staff to relay information so that student and teacher can understand one another;
  • Monitors student progress for the purpose of providing accurate and timely feedback and documentation;
  • Works under both direct and indirect supervision using standardized routines;
  • Provides clerical and general classroom assistance for staff (e.g. collecting and inputting data, correspondence, copying, filing, preparing and organizing classroom materials) for the purpose of documenting student progress and providing general support for classroom activities related to learning goals and objectives;
  • Participates in meetings and trainings for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving the employee’s skills and knowledge;
  • Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions;
  • Operates within a defined budget;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Responsibilities include working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Mathematical Skills –ability is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent’s, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: ASL or SEE (with requirement to attain the second skill within timeframe established by the District

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • The environmental factors described here are representative of those that may be present in the work place while the employee performs the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 25% sitting, 25% walking and 50% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, a generally hazard free environment, and in a clean atmosphere.

Education and Experience:

  • High School graduate or equivalent;
  • Completion of at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (72 quarter credits at 100 Course Level and above); OR completion of an Associate's (or higher) degree; and or Vocational School degree with study in job related area.
  • Job-related experience is required.
  • Expertise to perform single technical tasks.

 

Continued Education/Training:

  • Required to maintain all state license/certification required for positions as noted in the job description

Clearances:

  • Washington State Patrol and FBI Fingerprint Background Clearance.

Certificates:

  • Interpreter Certification__ASL or SEE as determined by the District based on program need.
  • Educational interpreters employed by SKSD must have successfully achieved a score of 3.5 on the performance portion of the Education Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) or hold Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification and pass the written assessment of the EIPA by the 2020-2021 school year
  • First Aid/CPR Certification required;
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License required.
