Job Description
SUMMARY
The Upward Bound Academic Coordinator reports directly to the Upward Bound Program Director. The Coordinator uses a Case Management approach for providing academic programs and services to participants. The Coordinator supervises academic and summer instructors and assists in the development and evaluation of a four-year curriculum for Upward Bound Participants. The Coordinator is responsible for scheduling courses that best fits the needs of the Upward Bound participants. The Coordinator works cooperatively with the other Upward Bound staff, target school counselors, and related support personnel in the college. The Coordinator helps supervise presenters of workshops.

- Arrange/plan/conduct Upward Bound participant recruiting at target schools.
- Conduct participant and parent interviews with potential participants.
- Assist in Determining eligibility for all incoming participants
- Develop and prepare UB promotional materials.
- Coordinate with target schools to plan and meet individually and/or in groups with participants regularly to provide academic advisement, information, and assistance to support successful school completion and post-secondary entry.
- Assist participants with educational exploration, goal setting, planning, and follow through.
- Monitor participants’ academic progress.
- Provide informational workshops for participants and parents.
- Supervise presenters of workshops
- Supervise and coordinate Saturday Academy (9 Saturdays/year) and Summer instructors (5-week summer residential program)
- Conduct and document regular instructor trainings/meetings
- Assist in planning and coordination of college visits, cultural activities, workshops, and academic events for participants, teachers, parents and the community (which include some nights/weekends in both the academic year and summer components).
- Assist in planning and coordination of a 5 Day Summer Trip for Upward bound participants
- Arrange/coordinate Saturday transportation with target schools
- Maintain accurate up-to-date participant records and database, including documentation of eligibility, student academic records, and documentation of contacts, exit information, and follow-up information.
- Prepare and maintain accurate project administration records, including travel forms, summaries, time and commitment forms, and time sheets.
- Compile and analyze data for reports and evaluations.
- Prepare and submit reports as requested by the Project Director.
- Assist Director with four-year academic curriculum plan for Upward Bound participants
- Build Academic Year and Summer schedule in OSIS (Open Student Information System)
- Schedule all Upward Bound students’ Academic Year and Summer Courses
- Review, monitor, and track all Upward Bound make-up work
- Assist Director with project evaluation.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to faculty and other employees of the college.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION /EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in education, counseling, public administration, sociology, social work, or related field preferred.

- At least three years’ experience working with students, preferably low income, academically disadvantaged populations, required.
- Demonstrated teaching and/or counseling experience required.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of disadvantaged students required.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds required.
- Experience with designing, managing, or implementing programs for disadvantaged youth required.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain flexible schedule, including evening and weekend work.
- Knowledge of college admissions and financial aid procedures.
- Background similar to that of the participants.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
- Experience in a TRIO project preferred.
- At least three years of supervisory work in a pre-college educational setting preferred.
- Knowledge of learning theory, learning styles, educational methods, and demonstrated ability to apply student development theories preferred.
