SummaryThe primary duties of the Microgrid Electrical Design Lead are to provide electrical design on products for electrical infrastructure, mentorship, and leadership for our Switchgear and PowerBlock Products manufactured at our PowerFab and DI Campus. These design activities are to provide guidance and assurance that our equipment is being designed and built and/or applied per engineering documents, manufacturing standards, and our UL, NEC and other required code standards. Our main goal is the safety, quality, functionality, and overall conformity of the products. This position will assist the overall team to meet the department mission: “We strive to provide a quality, functional, and safe product to the distributed generation and switchgear industries; and to all of our customers”.
Minimum Qualifications
(2) or (4) Year Degree in Electrical Engineering/Design or related technical field.
Minimum 5 years of related experience.
Ability to read and interpret documents to include work instructions, written directions, and markups to electrical drawings.
Strong analytical, communication and organizational skills with a desire for continuous improvement.
Be detail-oriented and accurate and have a positive can-do attitude.
Have strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, including collaborating with other teams.
Excellent time management, leadership, organization, and prioritization skills.
Proficient with 3-D [AutoDesk] Inventor / 2-D [AutoDesk] AutoCAD Electrical.
Knowledgeable with UL, NEC, and NFPA 79 standards.
Ability to critically analyze problems and develop effective solutions and grow as an engineer.
Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, including collaborating with other teams and providing constructive feedback.
Possess an understanding of NFPA, NEC, ISO and other power generation building / construction / installation codes.
Experience with UL (Underwriters Laboratory) listings and classifications.
Leading teams of designers/engineers on product development efforts and complex projects.
Proficient with MS Office applications: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
Proficient with PDM software and CAD-driven BOM structures, preferably AutoDesk Vault.
Familiar with working in an ERP environment.
Job responsibilities
Develop production deliverable sets; including BOM, Schematics, schedules, and other drawing details that will ensure the safe and efficient installation of this equipment. Ensure drawings are as-built, documents and manuals are filed on the server for use in O&M development.
Interface with design team for placement and code clearances of electrical and mechanical equipment.
Design for Manufacturability, reliability, field maintainability.
Identify and execute processes that may reduce the overall cost to manufacture.
Work on the electrical systems defined in the construction documentation or product specifications for the following House Power, Transformer, Panel Board, distribution and conduit, receptacles, lights and switches, HVAC, and switchgear heaters. Interface with switchgear controls, Engine block heaters, alternator strip heaters, Gas Train electrical needs, etc.
DC Systems. Station Battery, Racks, consoles, chargers, DC panel Boards and distribution details.
Special electrical/control needs such as Comms, gas leak detection, ventilation, fire detection and alarm interface to switchgear controls.
Develop document set; including BOM, schematics, wire/conduit schedules, and other drawing details that will ensure the safe and efficient installation of this equipment.
Identify and execute processes that reduce the overall cost to manufacture, install and operate our electrical infrastructure systems located on our generator and switchgear enclosure products.
Ensure schedules and milestone dates are achieved via the Master Production Schedule.
Prepare engineering drawings from sketches, verbal descriptions, specifications, and technical information.
Mentor staff on best modeling practices and PDM system usage to maintain deliverable consistency across department.
Enforce Standard Operating Procedures, design standards, and metadata integrity.
Create SOPs, examples, and standards to maintain departmental congruency.
Occasionally required to inspect products in-progress in manufacturing.
Strong electrical & design knowledge with ability to mentor other staff on good design practices and principles.
Hands-on: willing to get your hands dirty for the benefit of the team and to further our overall goals of legitimate engineering practices.
The successful candidate will actively participate in the design process in both the office and manufacturing floor.
Physical Demands
Occasionally required to inspect in-process work. Must be able to position one’s self in various positions including low to the ground or high up on equipment.
Occasionally assist in moving materials and equipment that weigh ~40lbs.
Manual dexterity to operate digital equipment, including computers and machine controllers.
Occasional exposure to and requirement to work around electrical testing, metal welding, forming, cutting and other industrial processes, often outdoors.
Available to work 40 hours and overtime when needed.
Work Environment Primarily office environment with the exception of Manufacturing shop visits
