ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR SCIENTIFIC DEVELOPMENT
General Summary
The Associate Director of Scientific Development assists the Vice President of Scientific Platforms with a variety of strategic initiatives essential to the success of the division and the enterprise as a whole. As a key contributor to scientific writing, this position develops, oversees, and administers the submission of scientific grant proposals and contracts as well as progress reports for grant and contract continuation of current funding and new funding applications of diverse scope. This position also identifies new opportunities for business development, client engagement, and continuation of current funding or new funding. Additionally, this position amplifies our scientific impact, assisting in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations, as well as a number of documents that communicate our capabilities, work and expertise. Finally, the associate director plays an integral role in the Scientific Platforms emerging strategic projects, implementing our objectives and key results, working with our leaders to create shared context, drive clarity, and appropriately prioritize time, mindshare, and resources toward core focus areas.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Serves as a thought partner to the vice president and directors on cross-functional operational and strategic topics including but not limited to – scientific direction, core capabilities, sponsored research opportunities, client engagement, and communicating scientific impact of the division.
  • Writes, edits, and submits all grant applications for new and existing programs within the Scientific Platforms Division with accuracy and consistency.
  • Maintains an updated capabilities deck, including working with the business development team to shape custom offerings for client engagement.
  • Uses internal data and analytical skills to guide the development, measurement, and tracking of objectives and key results (OKRs) for the division.
  • Works closely with scientific staff to become familiar with research and service offerings and incorporates that knowledge into writing/editing grant proposals.
  • Completes all applications with appropriate attachments, including budgetary and other financial items, for review by leadership and principal investigators prior to submission.
  • Develops and maintains a timeline for each grant submission to ensure adequate time for scientific review in order to submit the grant by the deadline.
  • Follows up with grant-making organizations during their review of a submitted grant application in order to be able to supply additional supportive material.
  • Prepares, organizes, and maintains standard information on the organization, its history and programs, and the background and credentials of key staff for use in grant applications. Updates this information as needed.
  • Develops standard template text to be used in grant applications and proposals.
  • Initiates and proactively maintains relationships with key program officers, in conjunction with the Vice President of Scientific Platforms and other project-specific personnel.
  • Coordinates and submits intermediate and closure grant reports for internal review and external submission.
  • Uses electronic submission systems to apply for grants, cooperative agreements, and specified contracts, and to submit reports.
  • Maintains current records in electronic and paper files to track grants and complete grant reporting, especially in compliance with key sponsor guidelines.
  • Proactively identifies organizations and initiatives for potential new grant submissions including, but not limited to, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, NIH, NCI, NINDS, ACS, NSF, and NIAID.
  • Works closely with the business development team, directors and principal investigators to identify new opportunities for sponsored research, including contract-based commercial research.
  • Monitors and tracks relevant funding opportunities related to the mission of the organization and provides requests for proposals (RFP), requests for information (RFI), and requests for quotes (RFQ) alerts.
  • Participates in and coordinates activities commonly associated with responding to RFPs, RFI, and RFQ.
  • Leads the Scientific Platforms Division in all grant and proposals activities (government, foundation grants).
  • Continuously looks for, implements and contributes to improvements that drive proposal process efficiencies.
  • Reviews and edits scientific manuscripts prior to submission for publication.
  • Closely works with the corresponding author and collects all necessary information prior to submission of manuscripts.
  • Meets deadlines for manuscript submission by working closely with authors and co-authors.
  • Gathers any relevant information from both a technical and editorial perspective for submission of quality manuscripts.
  • Supports any form of scientific writing required within the division, such as resumes, biographies, letters.
  • Needs to effectively communicate with both writing and verbal skills.
  • Completes other duties as requested by supervisor.
  • Helps build alliances and partnerships with other organizations to develop collaborations.
Requirements/Minimum Qualifications
  • M.S. degree in Chemistry, Biology or related scientific field and a minimum of 4 years of relevant grant writing and editing experience as well as project management experience.
  • Exceptional writing and analytical skills with the ability to write and edit within the context of grant guidelines.
  • Robust technical and scientific writing skills that effectively communicate scientific ideas that facilitate winning proposal development.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific terminology and concepts for lay audiences.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills with clear ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, projects, relationships, and initiative.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively manage the grant process with multiple collaborators, engage with SR leadership, and clients.
  • Committed to providing high-quality customer service to both internal and external customers.
  • The ability to succeed under pressure in a deadline-driven environment, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related scientific field preferred.
  • Experience writing RFPs, RFQs, and RFIs.
  • Scientific background with knowledge of drug discovery.
  • Working knowledge of MS Project and EndNote (or other reference management software).
