What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Spring Arbor University?
SUMMARY
Directs financial activities of the University by performing the following duties personally or through support staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Recommends to management, major economic objectives and policies for the University to ensure all financial transactions are properly and timely recorded.
- Prepares reports which summarize and forecast University business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings based on past, present, and expected operations.
- Review and present monthly financial statements and quarterly investment reports.
- Works with Vice President for Finance and Administration on annual budgets.
- Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare entries to accounts, such as general ledger accounts, documenting University transactions.
- Analyzes financial information detailing assets, liabilities, and capital, and prepares balance sheet, budget, and other financial reports to summarize current and projected University financial position.
- Advises management on desirable operational adjustments due to tax code revisions.
- Works with external auditors in the planning and preparation of the financial statements.
- Prepares reports required by regulatory agencies.
- Other duties as assigned.
REPORTING RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves as a member of business affairs reporting directly to the Vice President for Finance and Administration.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages employees in the accounting and accounts payable area, and selected auxiliary services. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year University required; Master’s degree in Accounting/Business or CPA preferred. 5 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience working in multicultural academic environments preferred and individuals from diverse populations are encouraged to apply.
