Overview

The Manager - Income Taxes will manage the income tax provision process (ASC 740) and income tax compliance for a growing multi-state natural foods retailer. The position will partner with accounting and finance departments to ensure accurate and timely reporting of income tax provision and income tax compliance.

 

Position reports into the Store Support Office in Phoenix, AZ with a Flexible Hybrid Shedule! 


Overview of Responsibilities

  • Tax Provision:
    • Quarter-end and year-end tax accounting and reporting process; prepare & perform initial review of tax provision work papers, gather and analyze data related to book/tax differences, complete account analysis and reconciliations, tax account, roll-forward schedules, journal entries and other schedules as requested
    • Work with Finance and Accounting departments on process improvements in the quarterly and annual tax provision process, with the objective of developing an internal tax provision process. Identify & implement technology solutions to minimize manual process.
    • Execute processes in line with required quarterly and annual SOX controls; interface with Internal Audit as requested
    • Research issues and document findings and recommendations
    • Work with Finance and Treasury department on forecasting effective tax rate and cash taxes
    • Work with Financial Reporting in preparing quarterly and annual financial statement income tax disclosures
    • Manage and develop intern/analyst. Incorporate new team members into the process
  • Income Tax Compliance/Tax Audits and Notices:
    • Gather, prepare & review information required for various components of federal and state income tax compliance; provide timely responses to data requests from co-sourcing providers related to federal and state income tax and unclaimed property compliance
    • Prepare federal and state extension and estimated payments, complete internal processing requirements for tax payments
    • Maintain tax compliance due date calendar
    • Work with the Finance and Accounting departments on process improvement in the compliance process
    • Gather and organize data required for federal and state income tax audits; prepare responses to audit queries as requested
    • Organize and provide timely replies to federal and state income tax notices
    • Research issues and document findings
    • Manage and/or prepared other regulatory filings, such as unclaimed property and annual reports filed with the Secretaries of State

Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • Masters Degree in Tax highly preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant highly preferred
  • 7 years of advanced relevant work experience in preparing and reviewing tax provisions and income tax compliance in a corporate tax department or 5 years in a combination of public accounting firm and corporate tax department
  • Ability to analyze and interpret federal and state tax laws and regulations, and communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Strong computer skills; MS Office, Excel, Word, tax research software and internet proficiency is required
  • Adaptability and ability to demonstrate flexibility in changing tasks and priorities
  • Curious mindset and able to work in a dynamic environment
  • Comfortable explaining complex tax issues to non-tax professionals including excecutives
  • Experience with fixed asset software required; Workday a plus
  • Demonstrated success working with complex processes, SOX compliance/controls accountabilities, experience with financial/process systems, and successful interface and partnerships with operations, vendors, finance and IT
  • Demonstrated experience with business process review, analysis and improvement
  • High attention to detail
  • Team oriented, highly motivated and self-sufficient individual
  • Grocery retail experience preferred
