Responsibilities

The Biosciences Division at SRI International has an opening for a Senior Scientist in the Center for Macromolecular Bioscience in Harrisonburg, VA.  We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated peptide chemist with interests in drug development and novel delivery platforms.  The scientist should be driven to contribute intellectually to a dynamic team environment and have a desire to participate in therapeutic discovery efforts with an emphasis on developing new platform technologies.

The SRI Harrisonburg site focuses on the development of novel platform technologies that enable cell-specific intracellular delivery of biological cargos. Based on this technology, we are actively pursuing novel therapeutics in oncology, neuroscience, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The scientist will be asked to:

Synthesize, purify, and analyze complex peptidesInitiate and direct peptide optimization campaigns Perform peptide conjugation to different classes of therapeutics, including biologicsTest peptides and peptide conjugates in cell-based assaysParticipate in active research programs in drug delivery, including intracellular delivery of biologic therapiesOversee research associates and direct their research effortsCollaborate with scientists from other disciplines (e.g., in chemistry, cancer biology, neuroscience and immunology) in cross-divisional teams.Develop an independently funded research program supported by a combination of grants and contracts from government and commercial sources. Interact with government and commercial partners, write scientific papers, and present work at scientific conferences.Build the SRI’s pipeline of therapies and discovery technologies.

Qualifications

Requires a Bachelors degree in chemistry or related field with a minimum of 2 to 5 years experience. Alternatively may require aMasters degree accompanied by 2 years experience.

Experience with solid phase peptide synthesis and conjugation chemistry is required. Excellent written and oral communication skills necessary; should work well in interdisciplinary team-based groups.

Post-offer, pre-laboratory physical examination may be required. Employment at SRI is contingent on successful completion of a background check.
