Church Sexton – Job Description
SEXTON Job Summary
The purpose of the Sexton is to keep St. Alban’s building and grounds clean and orderly; to perform basic preventative maintenance and repairs; set up church/rooms for use as needed, to keep the Parish Administrator advised of dangers/concerns about the condition and maintenance of buildings and grounds, to keep and maintain a supply of regularly used cleaning and maintenance supplies. The Sexton reports to the Parish Administrator.
Candidates for this position must complete a required background check.
Hours
Sunday – Thursday work week. Sunday availability is a must.
30 hours per week for candidates who can clean and handle light maintenance.
Full time consideration will be given to those who can do landscaping and groundskeeping work as well.
Duties and Responsibilities - Weekly
1.Prepare Church for Sunday services
- Dust all surfaces in Church
- Wipe down pews
- Mop floors and vacuum carpets
- Monitor all lights are and replace bulbs as needed.
- Dispose of all dead flowers in the church
2. Keep all church entrances and yard clear of debris/litter. Keep leaves and dirt away from entrances.
3. Open and close church before and after functions.
4. Rotate Vacuuming/Sweeping/Dusting (doing each at least once a week or more if needed), office areas, Church and Chapel, Restrooms, Sacristy, Conference Room, Vesting Room and Parish Lounge.
5. Make sure all bathroom/kitchen areas are clean and have adequate supplies.
6. Make sure all trash is emptied and recycled in an appropriate manner.
7. Monitor heating thermostats making sure they are set to the appropriate temperature.
8. Clean doors and windows within reach.
9. Order any maintenance supplies (paper goods, cleaning materials etc.).
10. Mow the church lawn and weed eat. (For candidates who can do landscaping)
11. Report safety and repair issues
12. Trim hedges and trees within reach
13. Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs.
14. Make sure all tools, lawnmowers, etc... are properly maintained and stored appropriately.
Duties and responsibilities - Occasional duties as needed (These may require extra pay or comp. time)
1. Assist in taking down and putting back seasonal decorations.
2. Perform needed set-up and clean-up before and after weddings, funeral services, and other functions.
3. Serve as liaison contact for technicians and tradesmen engaged to perform work on the Church property.
Required skills and experience
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- The ability to read, communicate, comprehend, and carry out instructions, short correspondence.
- The candidate for this position must have adequate reliable transportation.
- The ideal candidate will be comfortable with a riding lawnmower, basic power tools, simple painting, hedge trimming, power washing and a variety of other maintenance tasks.
Physical Demands
The individual in this position must possess the physical and sensory ability necessary to safely and successfully perform all essential job functions and responsibilities. This includes but is not limited to:
1. The ability to safely work with power tools such as drills, saws, lawnmowers and weedwhackers.
2. The ability to climb steps and ladders as well as to bend, pull, and push.
3. The ability to move and carry objects.
4. The ability to carry and lift up to 35 lbs.

Pay: $13.00 - $14.00 per hour
