Job Summary:
Upon adequate training, the Sleep Tech Assistant will be responsible for performing standard polysomnography procedures in the assessment of physiologic functions during sleep for patients ranging in age 3 years to geriatric. Responsible for the care, comfort and safety of the patient. Interacts with the patient throughout the evaluation and works to assure the patient's comfort and safety. Promotes patient understanding and compliance with all procedures. Will collaborate and communicate with physicians, nurses, medical equipment companies, providers, and patients. In addition to listed duties there is significant opportunity for advancement through on-the-job training. If applicable, sleep tech assistant will receive the proper clinical training and education to be eligible to become a registered polysomnography technician. This certification will open up additional opportunities and incentives.
Essential Functions:
Testing Set up and Monitoring
·Perform standard polysomnographic procedures. Set up, maintain and monitor mechanical breathing apparatus and respirators (CPAP, Bipap).
·Maintain a safe and quiet work environment for patients; responsible for the care, comfort and safety of the patient.
·Place leads and equipment on patient for over-night monitoring and assessment.
·Analyze, monitor and record physiologic data during sleep and wakefulness.
Communication
·Proficient verbal and written communication skills are essential.
·Collaboration with physicians, medical equipment providers, home health providers and patients.
·Works as part of a team under supervision to assist in the education, evaluation, treatment and follow-up of sleep disorders.
Additional Duties
·Cleans, sterilizes and maintains equipment such as masks, ventilators, flow meters, and tubing per manufacturer guidelines.
·Follows all safety rules applying to gas cylinders, ventilators and all electrical equipment.
·Data collection, data entry and recording results.
·Track mask usage.
Service Excellence
·Utilizes AIDET and HEART framework methods with patients and staff.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Education
Required: High School Diploma and BLS certification
Preferred: CNA or Medical Assistant Certification
Minimum Experience
Required: Customer service experience
Preferred: Past work experience in the medical field
Functional Demands:
Working Conditions: Sleep lab located in the Cardiopulmonary department. Office and administrative work space provided. Twelve hour shifts are required, usually18:30 to 6:30. Shifts are subject to change depending on the needs of the center. May be exposed to chemical vapors such as cleaning and disinfecting solutions. Must be on-site at the SJH campus to perform the duties of the role.
Physical Requirements: Frequently required to stand. Bending and reaching with hands and arms. Occasionally required to walk, sit, stoop, or kneel. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 lbs, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 lbs, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Must remain awake and alert throughout the duration of shift. May be required to work additional overnight shifts as department needs arise.
