JOB DESCRIPTION: Educational Assistant
Basic Function
The following job description is intended to help everyone better understand the responsibilities of a Teacher Aide position at St. John’s Lutheran School. This description of tasks does not outline all the details of the Teacher Aide, but covers in a general way the scope of the work which you will be expected to do.
As you take the position of a Teacher Aide, you are accepting a very important role in the functioning of our school. You will not only be working with the preparation and distribution of educational materials, but you will be working with people, especially children. Your attitude and actions should serve to further the work of God’s Kingdom in our school. Your interaction with the children should communicate to them your own love for Christ and His church. Whatever you do as a Teacher Aide should have the goal of drawing children closer to Jesus.
As you then carry out your duties as a Teacher Aide and work personally with others through your position, you will grow in your appreciation of the importance of your job and at the same time feel the satisfaction which accompanies the faithful performance of your tasks.

Responsible to: Classroom Teacher, Principal
Works With: Teacher, Students (Grades 1-2)
Qualifications
1. Holds at least a high school diploma or its equivalency. If direct instruction is required, however, a four-year degree in education is preferred.
2. Demonstrates the ability to work with students, staff and parents.
3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
4. Proven organizational and time management skills
5. Ability to maintain a professional personal appearance, a Christian attitude and work behavior at all times
6. Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
7. Ability to work well with students with various learning needs
8. Friendly and nurturing disposition
9. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Hourly Pay Rate
The Teacher Aide position currently pays $13-$18 per hour based upon experience. The Teacher Aide position hours are needed only when St. John’s Lutheran School is in session.
Hours
Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.; 12:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. (30-minute break for lunch)
DUTIES
This list generally describes possible areas of service of the Teacher Aide. Specific responsibilities will evolve with our program. The classroom teacher will orient you to specific tasks.
1. Assist pupils in skills, drills and reinforcements
2. Help with remedial work (math, spelling, reading)
3. Listen to individual students read
4. Record pupil progress on appropriate forms
You are doing the Lord’s work. Your job is a labor of love and faith. May He help you in your task as He has promised those who labor in His vineyard; may you pray to Him daily for needed wisdom and strength, and may He bless your efforts to His glory and the eternal welfare of His lambs.
General Responsibilities
1. Work on a one-on-one basis with children under the direction and guidance of the classroom teacher.
2. Assist in the instructional program of the school. This is accomplished by helping the teachers in their task of meeting the many individual needs of our children.
3. Teacher Aides are responsible to the teacher who prepares and plans lessons, activities, and seat work. They may be asked to assist in the preparation of materials planned by the teacher.
4. Teacher Aides may work in the classroom with the teacher or work with a small group of students in a room assigned for that purpose. They may supervise the work assigned by the teacher, such as practicing, reviewing concepts taught, reading with children, etc. In cases where a Teacher Aide would be responsible for direct instruction of the students, the School Board would seek an aide with a four-year degree in education.
5. Support students and instructional programs in other ways within the school context.
6. Unless they are responsible for direct instruction, the Teacher Aide will not be responsible for direct evaluation such as preparing and marking exams. They may, from time to time, be asked to do minimal corrections, but the final evaluation is done by the teacher.
7. Act as a positive role model for students through appropriate action and dress.
General Principles
1. Discipline and punishment will be handled by the classroom teachers. However, you are asked to help carry out the regulations of the school. You may have to remind children of their responsibilities. You are to inform the teacher of serious infractions.
2. Children are to be treated in an evangelical manner. Let your interaction with them be motivated by love for Christ and His lambs.
3. Use encouragement whenever possible. Praise when you can do so sincerely.
4. The Teacher Aide shall respect confidentiality of information pertaining to the school and the students. They will not have access to confidential records unless deemed necessary by the principal. Any inquiries from parents regarding their child’s progress shall be directed to the teacher. Communication with parents shall be through the teacher.
5. Keep problems in school. Refrain from gossip or idle words which may cause harm to the child or school and which violate the Eighth Commandment.
6. The Teacher Aide has the authority to administer disciplinary measures in regard to unacceptable behavior outside of the classroom. More serious or repeated incidents shall be brought to the attention of the teacher or the principal.
7. The Teacher Aide will not be expected to work outside of school hours.
8. If you are unable to come to the job on a specific day, please let the principal know as far in advance as possible.
9. Teacher Aide hours will be specified by the School Board.
