ManTech’s Human Space Flight Support (HSFS) team is integrated with and directly supports the First Air Force Detachment 3 (1 AF Det 3) mission of HSFS for all National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) crewed space programs - Soyuz, Artemis and Commercial Crew - across the Planning, Training, Execution, and Sustainment phases of the HSFS mission. Currently, ManTech is seeking an Astronaut Search & Rescue Mission Planning Specialist for temporary employment time range of March 1st, 2023, through February 28th, 2024, with the potential to extend up to 12 additional months. The candidate shall perform as a member of a planning team to coordinate astronaut rescue support by US military forces. Candidate will also perform as a liaison officer and air/surface advisor in support of the Department of Defense’s Human Space Flight Support program. The candidate shall support work on-site at PSFB and/or Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS) and temporary duty locations. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Provide subject matter expertise for the world-wide staging, alert, and employment of DoD rescue forces supporting NASA’s crewed spacecraft programs. Coordinate astronaut search and rescue support plans, requirements, and operations with military departments and government agencies. Provide support in an operations/coordination center during search and rescue operations. Provide support as a passenger on a military aircraft during search and rescue operations. Collaborate with mission partners to integrate standard DoD rescue aircraft and surface team tactics, techniques and procedures into contingency astronaut rescue operations. Collaborate with mission partners to develop documents, processes, courseware and plans to train aircrew and/or surface teams on mission-unique astronaut search and rescue procedures in multiple environments. Collaborate with mission partners to determine interoperability of DoD rescue-trained forces with air deployable rescue equipment associated with Artemis and CCP spacecraft and associated astronaut personal survival equipment. Conduct just-in-time crewed program specific search and rescue tactics, techniques, and procedures training to supporting aircrew and/or surface teams during astronaut rescue alert staging and mission activities. Provide command and control recommendations for dedicated and capable rescue forces. This position requires occasional travel to rescue alert mission locations in South Carolina and Hawaii. Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree required. 8 years of experience in a DoD or USCG search and rescue, special operations or special warfare career field. Possess an expert knowledge of rescue instructions, tactics, techniques and procedures. Duty history should include one or more tours as a headquarters-level (MAJCOM/COCOM/USCG Region or equivalent) staff planner. Ability to work well with and communicate effectively with a diverse group of contractor and Government employees team members and mission partners. Excellent organizational, leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Preferred Qualifications: Instructor certification/duty history in a DoD or USCG search and rescue, special operations or special warfare career field. Certification/qualification as an Air Force Combat Search and Rescue Coordinator (CSAR-C), Coast Guard On-Scene Coordinator (OSC), or Coast Guard SAR Mission Coordinator (SMC) or other-service equivalent. Security Clearance Requirements: Must have or be able to obtain a Secret security clearance. Physical Requirements: Must be able to fly aboard military aircraft in Mission Essential Personnel (crew) status. Must be able to lift, carry and manipulate a carry-on suitcase sized communication system weighing approximately 40 pounds.
