Definition
Under general direction, the Recreation Coordinator is responsible for planning, developing and coordinating special events and recreation programs primarily for community involvement; overseeing assigned part-time staff and volunteers who conduct programs, and perform other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a single position classification responsible for programs which are smaller and more focused in scope, requiring general and ongoing direction and guidance by the supervisor of this class. This class is distinguished from the Youth Services Coordinator classification by the latter’s responsibility for larger, multi-faceted programs. This classification reports to the Deputy Director, Regional Parks.
Examples of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Coordinates activities of the Environmental Science Day Camp program; creates and circulates advertising materials to schools inviting 4th and 5th grade students to participate in the single-day outdoor education program; schedules student classrooms for tours; prepares materials to be presented; ensures that the program is adequately staffed with part-time workers and volunteers.
2. Represents the Department at various trade shows and community events; researches and recommends these events to the supervisor.
3. Coordinates and plans Junior Fishing Workshops, Junior Fishing Derbys and Adult Fishing Workshops at Regional Park sites; researches and writes material to be presented during the workshops; may present workshops to groups outside of the County, i.e., Boy Scouts, Spring Valley Lake Association.
4. Researches various Internet websites for program ideas, activities and materials to include in and recommend for children’s programs.
5. Conducts basic job search activities in order to acquire small part-time and volunteer staff who assist with presenting programs, events and activities; trains and oversees staff working on programs.
6. Plans and implements various community events at the Regional Park sites (i.e., Movies in the Park, Doggie Poolooza). Searches for ideas and makes recommendations for new events and/or programs.
7. Assists the Youth Services Coordinator with larger County wide events by providing program support and technical assistance; plan and conduct “Kid’s Corner”, specialized programs and activities for children, youth and/or adults offered during larger County events.
8. Assists with the preparation of marketing materials for all programs/events and maintaining the Regional Parks Facebook page.
9. Assists with other clerical duties as assigned.
10. Provides vacation and temporary relief as required.
