Beef Cattle Farm Manager

Stagg Farms is a beef cow/calf operation looking for an experienced beef cattle manager and is located in Henderson, KY. Specifically, we are looking for someone with extensive knowledge in regenerative animal agriculture with an emphasis on intensive grazing management. Over the years, we have made great progress working toward a more holistic approach managing our cattle. We would like to build on that progress with a hands-on leader helping to pave the way! The ideal candidate is congenial, experienced, and has a strong work ethic and must be self-motivated to work alone as well as with others. This person must have experience managing cattle, running and maintaining equipment, and maintaining overall property.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage Livestock

Daily feed and pasture rotation of 250 head cow herd. Aid in: Setup and takedown of portable fencing, calving, castration, vaccinations, ear tagging, hauling cattle, and animal husbandry procedures.

  • Hay & Silage Production

Planting of annual winter grasses, coordination with fertilizer dealers on timely applications, accurately determining the best time to harvest based on quality and quantity while working around the weather. Harvest the crop using a mower conditioner, tedder, rake, baler, and silage wrapper. Hauling bales to various locations based on expected amount of bales needed per herd.

  • Maintain Property & Equipment

Perform the maintenance and repair of farm structures such as houses, buildings, fences, water lines, water troughs, and road/driveways. Weekly upkeep of grounds including mowing, trimming, blowing, and chainsaw work. Also, perform service and maintenance of tractors, mowers, side-by-sides, vehicles, farm equipment, and other power equipment.

  • Farm Improvement Projects

Strategically design and manage the construction of new handling facilities, fences, buildings, heavy use areas, and any other projects that may come up when the repair of existing infrastructure is no longer practical.

  • Operate Efficiently & Safely Machinery

Examples: Operate tractors, skid steer, backhoe, trucks, and trailers.

  • Skills Required

-Calm and effective cattle-handling technique

-Ability to catch a calf and castrate via knife or band and apply ear tag

-Able to operate a catch chute

-Able to give vaccinations, doctor sick animals, and assist a calving cow

-Ability to pregnancy check via rectal palpitation or blood test. AI experience is a plus.

-Ability to select bulls based on EPD’s and select replacement heifers

-Able to maintain accurate records of calving, vaccinations, antibiotics, and herd inventory

-Knowledge of fence construction techniques, including barbed wire, woven wire, high tensile, portable poly braid, geared portable reels, and solar electric boxes

-Ability to operate all types of machinery

-Drive trucks with trailers and be able to back them up in tight spots

-Mechanically inclined

-Basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and welding skills

  • Experience & Education

-Agriculture/animal science degree preferred but not required

- 4 years’ experience with regenerative grazing practices

- 4 years’ experience in the cattle production cycle

- 4 years’ experience with the production of hay and baleage

- 2 years’ experience managing or supervising others on a farm operation

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: Up to $85,000.00 per year
