What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laborer position at Standing Rock Sioux Tribe?
SCOPE OF WORK:
The Laborer will perform various aspects of road maintenance work such as mowing, chip seal, clean drainages, spread gravel, clean debris from culverts and will be required to safely operate tractors, mowers and other maintenance equipment as required.
SUPERVISION:
The Laborer will work under the direct supervision of the Tribal Roads Director, who will assign daily tasks and work schedules.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform heavy manual labor; shoveling, raking, carrying heavy material and equipment.
- Prepare culvert beds, clean, and other tasks deemed necessary.
- Mow road slopes and ditches with tractors mounted with mower.
- Crack sealing; Spread and tamp asphalt using tamper to repair joints and patch broken pavement.
- Flag motorist to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead.
- Set out caution signs and cones around work areas.
- Clean and complete minor repairs to drainage, bridge decks, guard rails and other structures.
- Haul and spread sand, gravel and clay to fill washout and repair road shoulders.
- Remove litter and debris from roadways.
- Clean and clear debris from culverts, catch basins, ditches and other drain structures.
- Maintain a day log of work location, time spent on project, equipment and fuel used and submit on a daily/weekly basis.
- Perform preventative equipment and tool maintenance and upkeep of shop.
- Observe established safety practices and procedures when working with tools and equipment.
- Other tasks that fall within the scope of road maintenance work.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED certificate with experience in maintenance and manual laborer field. In lieu of minimum education requirement will consider; documentation of pursuing High School/GED education with experience in maintenance and manual laborer field.
- Effective reading, writing and verbal skills.
- Comprehend and interpret a variety of information relating to equipment and facility maintenance.
- Proficient in the use and care of equipment and tools.
- Ability to recognize and solve problems in a practical and efficient manner.
- Must pass background check.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Demonstrate understanding of safety and ensure tools and equipment are maintained in proper working condition.
- Regularly walk, stand or stoop, frequently lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, material and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Agility to ascend and descend steep inclines.
- Ability to clearly communicate via radios and able to operate machinery, tools and equipment.
- Ability to perform work in noisy conditions and exposure potentially hazardous chemicals (grease, oils, fuel, dirt, solvents, fumes, noxious odors, dust, mist and gases).
- Ability to perform in conditions where there is potential risk for bodily injury from moving parts and machinery and the danger of shock, cuts, bruises and equipment accidents.
- Ability to work for long periods outdoors where exposure to hot, cold and inclement weather is present.
- Demonstrate familiarity with Standing Rock highways and roads.
- Ability to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
