The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a long term non permanent Fish and Wildlife Technician 4 located in Sitka!
What you will be doing:
This position works as a scientific (SCUBA) diver, and deckhand on research and stock assessment surveys for geoduck, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, abalone and pot shrimp fisheries in Southeast Alaska.
In support of these fisheries, the incumbent will participate in estimated 300-350 dives a year, during multiple trips lasting a week or more at sea from mid-April to mid-August.
The position must have good small boat handling skills, demonstrate good seamanship, and display a safe attitude during all operations at all times.
This position is responsible for maintenance and repair of dive skiffs and dive gear in a fully functional and safe operating condition.
This position will also participate as deckhand for the annual pot shrimp surveys including baiting, deploying, and hauling sets of shrimp pots.
- When not at sea this position is responsible for data entry and quality assurance.
Requires frequent (multiple times per month) travel within the State.
Requires extensive work at sea often in inclimate weather.
- Requires a physician`s certification of physical fitness for diving is required as a condition of hire.

The working conditions you can expect:
Dive and shrimp surveys are conducted aboard the Research Vessel Kestrel, and 105 foot vessel home ported in Petersburg, AK. Surveys are generally 8 days in length, with 6 days of diving. Days at sea can be long with skiff and gear maintenance, and data entry responsibilities as well as diving. Duties while not at sea include data entry and quality control as well as survey equipment maintenance and travel logistics planning.
Who we are looking for:
Extensive cold water diving experience including at least 50 dives in a drysuit as well as Rescue Diver certification.
Experience utilizing underwater scientific survey techniques.
Extensive experience piloting and navigating small craft. As well as experience in maintenance and troubleshooting of outboard engines.
- Experience working effectively as part of a team, in remote settings.

Special Note:

2. A physician`s certification of physical fitness for diving is required as a condition of hire.
3. Certification in the following is required by the State of Alaska, Department of Fish and Game, Dive Safety Manual: Basic SCUBA; Rescue Diver Certification with Dry Suit and Nitrox certification.

AND
One year of experience as a journey level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 3.
OR
Four years of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.
Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.
Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, traveling by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs or chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are often full-time but may be seasonal or temporary.
Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.
Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.
