White Mountain Fire Crew Crewmember Wildland Fire and Resource Technician I (PCN 10-DNR-93)

The Alaska Division of Forestry is recruiting Crewmember positions for the White Mountain Fire Crew based in Fairbanks Ak. We are looking for highly motivated highly reliable people to join out organization. Under strict direction and close supervision, crewmembers will participate in wildland fire preparedness (training, fuels mitigation) and suppression activities (line constructions, structure protection, mop-up).

The mission of the Division of Forestry is to develop, conserve, and enhance Alaska’s forests to provide a sustainable supply of forest resources for Alaskans. The Fairbanks Area office provides wildland fire protection on 8.5 million acres in interior Alaska. The incumbent will be a Lead Crewmember on the White Mountain Type II Initial Attack fire crew. Under supervision crewmembers will participate in fire suppression, training, and fuel mitigation. This is a Long Term Non-Permanent seasonal position with great opportunities for training, travel and career advancement. Health/life insurance benefits are provided.  

Core Responsibilities:

• Maintain readiness throughout the fire season. Be available for assignment in Alaska, the lower 48, and Canada (must have valid Passport.)
• Properly use and maintain emergency vehicles, hand tools, pumps, hose, chainsaws, GPS units, and compass.
• Communicate effectively (written, verbally, two-way radio) with subordinates, supervisor, and cooperators.
• Assist as directed in the completion of administrative duties.
• Participate in training.
• Inform supervisors on all aspects related to safe and effective crew operations. 
• Participate in daily safety briefings and after-action reviews.

White Mountain is based out of Fairbanks, Ak in conjunction with Fairbanks area Forestry. This position will require travel in and out of the state. You will be required to live and work in remote locations, shifts often lasting 16 hours a day and for periods of up to 14 to 21 days. Work will be carried out in all types of terrain and weather conditions.


White Mountain is seeking candidates that have experience working in the wildland fire environment.

• Have knowledge of strategies and tactics used in the suppression of wildfire.
• Experience working with and maintaining portable pumps, hose lays, chainsaws and hand tools.
• Understand and apply the 10 Standard Firefighting Orders and 18 Watchout Situations.
• Ability to work as a member of a team.

Special Notice
This position requires frequent travel in and out of state and assignments lasting 14-21 days.

Be prepared to work in hazardous and extreme environmental conditions.

Travel on fixed wing and rotor wing aircraft, sometimes on a daily basis.

Must be eighteen years of age.

Special Note: 
Applicant must be able to pass the Work Capacity Test at the "Arduous" level as defined in Federal Publication PMS 307, Work Capacity Test Administrator' Guide. This test requires that the applicant complete a 3-mile hike carrying a 45-pound pack over level terrain in 45 minutes or less.

Must possess an Alaska driver's license. An individual without an Alaska driver's license, who meets the minimum age and experience requirements, may apply for the vacancy. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon acquisition of an Alaska driver's license. Proof of licensure will be required prior to reporting to duty.

Positions may require travel both in and out-of-state for fire suppression assignments; must be on stand-by or recall status during the fire season; must be available for assignments in and out of the area that requires the absence from the duty station for 14 to 21 days; must fly in small fixed wing aircraft or helicopters; and handling hazardous materials.

Some positions require a commercial driver license with appropriate endorsements.
