Job Summary:

Provides clinical oversight, management and supervision to nurse shift supervisors and subordinate nursing staff on assigned unit/units (Sycamore and Mohave) at the Arizona State Hospital; utilizes advanced psychiatric and medical nursing practices in assisting others in competent and quality provision of care to patients; functions as the liaison between nursing administration/management and the unit level staff; functions as role model in the mentoring of staff; provides consultation and participates with multidisciplinary treatment teams to influence the plan of care for patients and to enhance abilities of others to provide psychiatric and mental health care and effect positive change within the hospital system; provides training and education to subordinate staff; conducts and/or implements research to guide and improve nursing practice; advocates for patient care; assists subordinates to achieve success in their role and the workplace.

Job Duties:

- Provides clinical leadership to the nursing team to include oversight of milieu management.
- Provides oversight to ensure patient records are properly documented and patient assessments completed as per policy requirements. Conducts ongoing and special audits to ensure compliance with documentation and performance expectations. Attends and offers in-service instruction to maintain or increase knowledge of leadership, supervision, management, pharmacology, psychiatric nursing and other related health care issues.
- Ensures the provision of orientation, supervision and management of staff therapeutic activities, on the job training of staff; assists in evaluation of job performance; acts as an education resource person for nursing employees.
- Conducts required/assigned audits, prepares/presents reports to include findings, conclusions,
recommendations and follow up actions.
- Is an active member of the Nurse Executive Team (NET) and other assigned committees as appropriate.
- Ensures adherence to regulatory agency rules/regulations/standards and to hospital policies and procedures.
- Participates in maintaining safe, therapeutic environment; offers suggestions for improvement. Confers and collaborates with hospital disciplines.
- Implements and/or participates in nursing research activities on nursing best practices. Educates staff to new methods, changes in policies and procedures, and implementation of nursing best practices.
- Other duties as assigned as related to the position (typically 5% - 10%)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge Of:

-Application of psychiatric nursing
-Hospital policies and procedures and pharmacology
-Personality theories, crisis intervention and therapeutic communication skills
-Performing and implementing research
-Team building and participation in team exercised at the management level
-Audit processes and report writing
-Principles of adult learning
-Advanced psychiatric assessment skills
- Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and
Lean methodologies.

Skill In:


-Perform advanced psychiatric assessments
-Perform clinical supervision of staff, to apply knowledge about personality theories, crisis
intervention and therapeutic communication;
-Performing and implementing nursing research
-Increase competence of staff through teaching and role modeling
-Providing consultation regarding staff and patient issues
-Presentation to groups, report development, training and mentoring of staff.

Ability to:

-Perform audits, analyze findings and implement suggest changes/action plans
-Utilize adult learning principles in educating mentoring and coaching of subordinate staff
-Lead and supervise a team
-Provide for staff assessed educational needs
-Communicate to a variety of staff at all levels
-Implement management of staff

Selective Preference(s):

Bachelor's degree in Nursing and at least three years experience as a psychiatric nurse, two of which are in a leadership role, as a supervisor or higher.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

- Must possess a license in good standing as a Registered Nurse in the State of Arizona.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR and NVCI certification.
- A State Hospital employee must possess a valid level one fingerprint clearance card issues pursuant to A.R.S.41-1758.07 or must apply for a level one fingerprint clearance card within seven working days after beginning employment.

Retirement:

To help you build a financially secure future, the State makes monthly contributions to finance your retirement benefit. The State will make a contribution to the ASRS in an amount equal to your contribution. In other words, you and the State will each pay 50% of the total cost of the benefit. New State employees have a 27 week wait period for contributions to begin.
