To provide a safe, clean, aesthetically attractive and functional campus environment through the maintenance of all campus buildings and building areas for the enhancement of the learning environment, the overall appeal of campus, as well as the level of human safety and comfort.



This position exists to support the mission of the University by ensuring that the campus buildings are safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing to all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The Custodian IV is responsible for ensuring both custodial teams work together to successfully carry out the assigned daily activities in an efficient and effective manner. The Custodian IV is also responsible for communicating the needs between the Custodial Supervisors and the Senior Director of Facilities: Physical Plant Management.

Primary Duties
Custodial Supervision
This position will supervise, prioritize, assign and schedule the work to be completed by direct reports. This position will schedule all overtime and emergency needs for direct reports including inclement weather and event coverage. This position will monitor and evaluate the work of reporting staff, as well as create performance plans and goals in conjunction with staff members. This position will create work standards and administer progressive discipline as necessary. The position will conduct building audits and walkthroughs to ensure buildings are being appropriately maintained and cleaned and that work standards are being met. This position will facilitate the hiring of new employees and provide appropriate training when required. This position will approve leave for direct reports while maintaining adequate coverage to meet the needs of the University including coverage of weekend events, winter weather operations and campus emergencies.
 
Custodial Strategy
This position will develop and implement standard operating procedures, practices, and strategic direction for the custodial department to improve efficiencies and level of service. This includes custodial event coverage, custodial supply ordering, custodial equipment, and custodial staffing. This position will also manage and schedule larger deep cleaning projects with campus departments and custodial staffing. The position will serve as a resource to other departments on campus on the cleanliness and sanitation of University spaces. The Custodian IV promotes respect, integrity, and adaptability within the organization while maintaining a healthy and sustainable environment for the students, faculty, and staff.

Manage Custodial Expenses and Supplies
This position will work with the Budget Analyst to maintain the Custodial budget. The position will work with Facilities staff and vendors to manage expenses. This position will work with the Custodian Ill's to make sure that all custodians are supplied appropriately to complete their jobs while still maintaining the budgeted expenses for supplies

Assist other Facilities Staff
Position is required to assist all other Physical Plant staff as needed to include other duties as assigned by immediate Supervisor. The Custodian IV will also modify team duties and schedules to accommodate these requests through their team. This includes snow and ice removal on campus and spreading ice melt as needed to maintain safe walkways for campus stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Three years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position, two of which must have been at the level of a unit supervisor or equivalent.

Essential Services Designation (Required to be on duty to perform essential and/or emergency services of the agency without delay or interruption.) 
Provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety and welfare of all faculty, staff, students and community members including before and after regular scheduled shift. This includes emergencies such as broken windows, power outages, storm damages and snow removal due to inclement weather including during University closures, after-hours and weekends. 

Position may include use, handling and exposure to hazardous material through the use of custodial cleaning supplies and chemicals and ice melt.
