Introduction

\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe State of Connecticut, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is a free-standing. modern facility located on the UCONN Health Center Campus in Farmington, CT.� The office is a state-wide medical examiner system charged with the investigation of sudden and unexpected deaths that, by statute, fall under our jurisdiction.�\r\n\r\n\r\nWe are recruiting for a part-time, 21 hours per week�Forensic Technician 1�position.� The scheduled for this position is 4:00am - 11:30am, Monday & Tuesday, and 9:00am -� 4:30pm on Thursdays, but must be flexible and open to all shifts.� On-call and holiday coverage, as well as availability for calls on an emergency basis is also required for this position.� Forensic Technicians work under supervision, and in this role:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Prepares bodies for autopsies and subsequent release to funeral directors;�\r\n Assists in the performance of autopsies and collection of relevant information;\r\n Assists in removal of organs, collection of body fluids and retention of specimens for special studies;\r\n Prepares fixative solutions;\r\n Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of autopsy facilities and equipment;\r\n Assists in maintenance of appropriate records;\r\n May take fingerprints and photographs;\r\n Picks up decomposed and traumatized bodies;\r\n Takes inventory of and makes receipt for clothing and valuables;\r\n Maintains chain of custody of body and evidence from crime scenes;\r\n Handles the removal of bodies from hospitals and/or secured crime scene areas;\r\n May take and develop X-rays;\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\nNote:� In addition to the checking of references and facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation will be completed before the candidate is certified for appointment.\r\n\r\n\r\n

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner this class is accountable for performing the basic technical duties related to autopsy and postmortem medicolegal death investigations.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Under supervision prepares bodies for autopsies and subsequent release to funeral directors; assists in performance of autopsies and collection of relevant information; assists in removal and dissection of organs, collection of body fluids and retention of specimens for special studies; prepares fixative solutions; maintains cleanliness and sanitation of autopsy facilities and equipment; assists in maintenance of appropriate records; may take fingerprints and photographs; picks up decomposed and traumatized bodies; takes inventory of and makes receipt for clothing and valuables; maintains chain of custody of body and evidence from crime scenes; may assist in removal of bodies from hospitals and/or secured crime scene areas; may take and develop X-rays; performs related duties as required.\r\n

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Some knowledge of human anatomy, laboratory/surgical equipment and terminology; basic interpersonal skills; basic oral and written communication skills; ability to carry out written and oral instructions; ability to follow prescribed procedures; ability to keep technical records and prepare reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year's experience in related work in a morgue, laboratory, hospital or funeral home.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

\r\n One (1) year experience in related work in a morgue, laboratory, hospital or funeral home;�\r\n Possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's License and be available for calls on an emergency basis;\r\n Able to physically perform lifting of bodies of weights and sizes;� � �\r\n Undergo periodic test or immunizations for communicable diseases as necessary.\r\n\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's License.2. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel. Incumbents must be available for calls on an emergency basis.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must be willing to undergo periodic tests or immunizations for communicable diseases as necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class will be required to lift bodies; will be exposed to strongly disagreeable conditions.
