The Work You Will Do:
The Waste Site Cleanup Section and Drycleaning Solvent Cleanup Program manages the state-funded investigation and cleanup of hazardous waste sites and emerging contaminants, coordinate with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) during the cleanup of federal Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) sites, and implement the Florida Drycleaning Solvent Cleanup Program. Management of these sites involves an interdisciplinary combination of geology, hydrogeology, chemistry, engineering, and environmental science to mitigate risk and protect human health and the environment.

The Professional Engineer II works as a Project/Contract Manager and is responsible for and assists with the technical and managerial aspects of State-Funded hazardous waste cleanup sites, Superfund site rehabilitation projects, and Drycleaning Solvent Cleanup Program sites to ensure the environmental effectiveness of these projects in accordance with the National Contingency Plan (NCP), CERCLA/SARA and state regulations as appropriate.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
- The incumbent is required to be registered in the State of Florida as a certified Professional Geologist. The duties of the position include the following Provides professional geology document review support to Section’s project managers and the Section’s lead P.G. Assists in review of Site Assessment work plans, Site Assessment Reports, Monitoring Reports, and Site Rehabilitation Completion Reports for the Drycleaning Solvent Cleanup and the State-Funded Cleanup Programs. Required to review professionally certified and sealed documents. Provides written comments and approvals. Works with section staff and contractors to ensure compliance with State and Federal laws and rules, as appropriate.
- Provides technical assistance to other section staff, consultants, and the public regarding technical issues relating to site assessments, site hydrogeology, remedial alternatives and related technical topics. This assistance may include participation in technical meetings, enforcement activities, legal testimony, and on-site visits. Employee provides guidance to ensure statewide consistency in cleanup of sites.
- Provides technical expertise and guidance regarding compliance with state and federal hazardous waste disposal regulations. Maintains communication with government, academic, and professional associations regarding new and innovative methods for site assessment and cleanup.
- Works with section engineering staff in evaluating remedial alternatives and participates in selection of alternatives consistent with National Contingency Plan (NCP), CERCLA, and State regulations and initiatives, as appropriate.
- Assists the Section Administrator in developing section procedures and policy for assessment and monitoring of site cleanups. Performs on-site inspection of well drilling activities to ensure conformance with plans and specifications.
- Acts as project officer on cleanup projects at hazardous waste sites, on a limited basis.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of geology, hydrogeology, chemistry and applied biology of Florida's groundwater.
- Knowledge of technical oversight of remediation activities.
- Knowledge of site assessment techniques and methods, including monitoring well construction and sampling, especially for hazardous waste sites.
- Knowledge of state and federal hazardous waste management and cleanup regulations.
- Ability to write effectively, in a well-organized and understandable manner.
- Ability to communicate orally in a clear and effective manner.
- Ability to evaluate comprehensive technical documents.
Required Qualifications:
- Valid State of Florida Licensed Professional Geologist (Chapter 492, F.S.).
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in geology, environmental science, or one of the natural sciences and three years of verifiable related experience; or any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total of seven years.
Other Job Related Requirements for this position:
- Valid Driver License.
- OSHA Safety Training successfully completed within six months of employment.
