The Georgia Department of Education - Area School for the Deaf is searching for a School Counselor to join our team. This position supports the school program by providing a variety of behavior management services to students and assisting them to develop age-appropriate interpersonal skills and behavioral competencies that includes, counseling, consultation with staff, student intervention, and skill training.
- Facilitate the provision of student groups in social skill development, conflict resolution, behavior management, and other areas as designated by the Superintendent or school administrator.
- Assist the school administrators in the development and coordination of social development programs and services for students.
- Respond to and de-escalate behavior of students during crisis/behavior incidents and other situations as necessary.
- Use teaching interactions such as counseling, discussion of behavior and role playing to teach appropriate behavior.
- Model behavioral interventions for staff within the instructional program.
- Provide interim supervision of students as needed.
- Interact appropriately with students and ensure interventions are compliant with laws, regulations and agency policies and procedures.
- Serve as a member of the multi-disciplinary team.
- Assist in evaluation and interpretation of information concerning students.
- Coordinate and assist with Transition Coordinator and High School Assistant Principal
- Participate in the admissions process.
- Assist with the development of Functional Behavior Assessments for students whose behavior is interfering with their learning.
- Assist with the development of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).
- Consult with behavior support team and develop Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) for students in need of intervention.
- Use assessment feedback to monitor and adjust PBIS strategies.
- Keep all required data and submit reports in a timely manner.
- Assist Administration in the management the incident report process and enter incident reports and pertinent behavior information into the student information system.
- Provide consultation to school staff, parents, and local school districts of students who are deaf or hard of hearing regarding behavior strategies, supports and interventions for students needing interventions and supports.
- Provide consultation to external organizations regarding AASD students during emergency or crisis intervention occurring after school hours.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:
- GaPSC certification in School Counseling, the qualifications for a Standard Professional certificate include:
- One of the following:
- Completion of a School Counseling approved program (https://www.gapsc.com/EducatorPreparation/ApprovedPrograms/EducationApprovedPrograms.aspx) at the master's degree level or higher or submission of a professional School Counseling certificate issued by another state at the master's level;
- Submission of a valid National Certified School Counselor (NCSC) credential issued by the National Board of Counselors or;
- Submission of a valid State of Georgia Professional Counselor's license (LPC or LAPC) issued by the Professional Licensing Boards Division of the Secretary State.
- Pass the GACE (https://gace.ets.org/) content assessment or copy of official score of the content exam required to obtain the out-of-state professional certificate or verification of 5 years of acceptable experience in the field earned while holding the professional out-of-state certificate.
- Completion of a course in identifying and educating exceptional children (https://www.gapsc.com/Certification/SpecialGeorgiaRequirements.aspx) with a grade of B or better.
- ASL proficiency at 4 or above as measured by the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI)
- Computer literacy
- Understanding of and experience working with the Deaf community
- Experience in school setting environment
- Valid Georgia Driver's License
VERY IMPORTANT
Applicants must exhibit the ability to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL) during the interview with the expectation of obtaining an American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI) rating of 3 or above within three years from the date of hire.
Master's degree in education or a related field from an accredited college or university AND Five years of related experience OR Bachelor's degree in education or a related field from an accredited college or university AND Seven years of related experience.
