About this position
The Illinois State Police is looking to hire a physician with a specialty in medical management. The ideal candidate will have experience working with law enforcement agencies and have a good understanding of the medical issues facing law enforcement today.
Job Responsibilities
1. Plans, develops and implements a comprehensive statewide Medical Response Program for the Illinois State Police, as required by the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) System Act (210 ILCS 50/).
- Serve as the medical consultant to Illinois State Police (ISP) personnel, on and off duty.
- Reviews and evaluates referrals requiring a medical opinion.
- Provides medical expertise and guidance to ISP staff as it relates to sworn officers and their ability to perform the essential functions required of an officer.
2. Serves as the medical expert and consultant of the ISP Medical Review Board.
- Interprets medical reports submitted on behalf of civilian employees, as well as sworn officers, related to fitness for duty.
- Makes recommends to the Colonels serving on the MRB on issues related to fitness for duty or return to work issues.
3. Serves as spokesperson on behalf of the ISP, representing the Director.
- Travels to various internal and external meetings, often of a sensitive and confidential nature.
- Serves as liaison with professional associations, organizations, and medical institutions as it relates to law enforcement.
4. Provides oversight and administrative direction for the Academy and Training Division related to cadet pre-employment medical examinations.
- Monitors and evaluates all cadet medical screenings to ensure the candidate meets the physical and medical requirements to be an ISP Trooper.
- Makes recommends for additional testing or evaluations needed to determine a candidates' ability to perform the essential functions of an officer.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Five (5) years of experience working with law enforcement.
2. Five (5) years of experience evaluating occupational health.
3. Five (5) years of experience training in an occupational setting such as law enforcement officers.
Minimum Qualifications
Illinois license to practice medicine.
Employment Conditions
1. Successfully pass ISP background.
2. Successfully pass ISP drug screen.
3. Maintain availability during off hours for consultation.
