Essential Function 1

30% Install, repair, replacement, and maintenance of heating, water, underground gas line, plumbing, sanitary sewer systems, storm sewers, gas pipe (both threaded and fusion welded), steam and condensate pipes, and fire protection systems in all structures.

Travels to various locations throughout the Chicago area as part of the Chicago Maintenance Team.

  • Inspects work site to determine the materials, equipment, tools, and method to complete job.
  • Locate underground piping, as required, developing a plan or layout for the work, updating, and following blueprints, sketches, or schematics, assembling, building, repairing, rebuilding, modifying, or installing materials and equipment as required by the scope of work.
  • Use hand, power tools and motorized equipment common to the plumbing trade.

Essential Function 2

25% Complete, assigned projects with quality workmanship by using hand or power tools (such as sewer auger or vacuum plunger, acetylene torch, soldering and welding tools, pipe threader and cutters, gas leak detector, sewer camera, pipe locator, and appropriate chemicals).

Essential Function 3

15% Use electrical test equipment, small hand and power tools, mechanical equipment, and materials applicable to the plumbing trade.

Essential Function 4

15% Provides means of access to route pipe(s) through walls, floors, and other structures as may be required by dismantling or cutting through structural and other physical barriers to gain access for repairs or for new installations.

Perform general maintenance, annual inspections and replacements of backflow prevention devices as needed.

Essential Function 5

5% Submit list of plumbing and / or HVAC supplies, in writing, as needed for requisition and emergency supplies.

Essential Function 6

5% Assists, instructs, and monitors skilled and unskilled workers as it pertains to the repair and performance of plumbing assignments.

Essential Function 7

5% Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school.
  • Requires possession of a valid plumber’s license issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
  • Requires the possession of a valid certificate as a Cross-Connection Control Device Inspector (CCCDI) or the acquisition of the certificate within the probationary period of employment.
  • Requires computer literacy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prefers extensive knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods and practices of the plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning and refrigeration trades.
  • Prefers working knowledge of laws relating to sanitation and public health.
  • Prefers three (3) years of professional experience utilizing all tools of the plumbing trade.
  • Prefers three (3) years of professional experience instructing and / or directing semi-skilled workers, unskilled workers, and trade helpers.
  • Prefers two (2) years of professional experience reading, interpreting, and working from blueprints, plans, simple drawings, or sketches.

Employment Conditions

1. Requires the ability to pass a DoD background investigation and obtain a DoD Common Access Card (CAC) prior to hire or transfer.

2. Requires possession of appropriate valid driver’s license.

3. Requires statewide travel as part of a Maintenance Team within the normal workday hours.

4. Requires ability to lift and carry 80lbs, i.e. heavy boxes and supplies.

5. Requires ability to climb stairs and ladders.

6. Requires being on feet for long periods of time.

7. Requires being on hands and knees, to bend and stoop for long periods of time.

8. Requires ability to withstand extreme temperature changes when working outside and inside.

9. Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, while wearing protective gear when needed.
