Position Overview

The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Security Officer for the Madden Mental Health Center located in Hines, Illinois to perform safety property and protection services involving patients, employees, visitors, and state property within the facility on an assigned shift.

Assists other unit staff in restraining and controlling combative or acting out patients. Takes actions allowed to apprehend uncooperative and potentially combative patients within policies and procedures.

Enforces traffic rules and regulation of the facility. Assists supervisor with gathering paperwork, collecting written statements from patients and staff, secures possible crime scenes and communicates with Law Enforcement and assists as directed.

Prepares detailed reports as needed. Communicates with patients, staff, and other members of the community.

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs safety property and protection services involving patients, employees, visitors, and state property within the facility on an assigned shift.
  • Assists other unit staff in restraining and controlling combative or acting out patients at the time of their admission and during their hospitalization at the facility.
  • Enforces traffic rules and regulations of the facility.
  • Takes actions allowed to apprehend uncooperative and potentially combative patients who are attempting to leave the facility without authorization as stated within policies and procedures.
  • Assists supervisor with gathering paperwork, collecting written statements from patients and staff, secures possible crime scenes.
  • Communicates with patients, staff, and other members of the community, including law enforcement, when required, during investigations and reports results relating to unusual incidents.
  • Participates in CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training for the nonviolent physical control of combative patients and completes CBL (Computer Based Learning) training and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) annually.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school.
  • Qualifying state employees in the Upward Mobility Program shall have the stated requirements of this classification waived by successful completion of specified proficiency tests and training programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of experience working with security requirements and regulations for a public or private organization.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the use of security enforcement practices and techniques.
  • Two (2) years of experience working with emergency response procedures including fire safety and controls for a public or private organization.
  • Two (2) years of experience providing initial responses to security breaches and safety hazards.
  • Two (2) years of experience communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
  • One (1) year of basic proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office with basic computer skills.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires the ability to travel in the performance of job duties.
  • Requires ability to climb stairs, chase runaways and physically restrain and control patients.
  • Requires ability to work after business hours, weekends, holidays, including being mandated to work.
  • Requires ability to become OIG rule 50.3 certified within 90 days of employment.
  • Requires the ability to obtain and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
  • Requires the ability to work in a 24 hour on-call capacity.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

Work Hours : 10 : 00pm-6 : 00am; Thursday-Monday, Days off - Tues and Wed; 1 hour paid lunch
