Purpose of Position

Why does the job exist?
This position will assist a Survey Field Unit in measuring and collecting spatial data needed to provide controlled mapping for location and right of way surveys for planning, design development, right of way acquisition/monumentation and construction of highway improvement projects.
How does it get done?
Check and verify survey data and calculations. Utilize maps, plans, survey data, and GIS data in order to search and or perform survey calculations in the field/office to assist in the completion of surveying and mapping activities. Plan and perform field work for various types of surveys. Upon completion reduce field notes and process electronic survey data to utilize and prepare project deliverables using Computer Aided Drafting software and other computer software as needed.

Department of Transportation project staff and the traveling public.
Ideal Candidate
High School Diploma or GED with 2 years experience in topographic and route surveying to include one 1 year in the development of topographic and location mapping plans for Highway Construction. Experience with Trimble GPS and Robotic Total Stations, Trimble Business Center, and AutoCAD Civil-3D.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. Business reference check and driver's license verification are required and employment is conditional pending results. May require Technician Training Certification Program (TTCP) certificates within one year of hire to include but not limited to; Nuclear Densometer, Concrete Field and Lab Testing, Aggregate, Soils, Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Traffic Control and SWPPP.
Working Conditions
Executive Order 2021-066 requires all employees with the State of New Mexico to provide either proof of COVID-19 vaccination (including proof of a booster dose of vaccine by January 17, 2022, or within four weeks of becoming eligible for a booster dose) or proof of a COVID-19 viral test every week.
The Public Health Order (on Vaccination) dated December 2, 2021, requires Congregate Care Facility Workers and Hospital Workers to have received a primary series of vaccination by October 6, 2021, and a booster dose of vaccine by January 17, 2022, or within four weeks of becoming eligible for a booster.

Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. May include exposure to: sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises, and confined spaces; falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances. Hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call outs for emergencies. Willingness to accept change of geographical assignments. Interaction with the public by phone and in person. Frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays to include weekends, holidays, and overtime are required.
