Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.
Why does the job exist?
This position ensures that visitors have a safe and positive experience at the New Mexico Museum of Art; protects Museum facilities and collection; and acts as custodial staff on a daily basis and back up cashier when needed.
How does it get done?
Conduct constant patrols of all galleries and grounds to provide protection and security of museum buildings and valuable and irreplaceable artifacts. Report and document all gallery and post checks on the daily activity log; assist custodial with general custodial upkeep of Museum facilities and grounds; monitor surveillance cameras; respond promptly to emergency situations and complete necessary documentation; and act as back up cashier when needed.

This position serves Museum visitors and Museum staff.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has experience working in security, managing crowd control during busy school/special events, writing reports, customer service, monitoring closed-circuit television (CCTV), and is comfortable with monetary transactions. High school education preferred.
Minimum Qualification
Eighth grade education.
Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a public work setting; requires working during inclement weather and performing assigned duties, including snow removal. There is two-way radio use and exposure to visual/video display terminal. Requires overtime for special events and other activities within the Museum. Evening, weekend, and holiday hours are scheduled, and availability for emergencies is required. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
