Purpose of Position
Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.
Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to monitor and report economic trends specific to New Mexico's tourism industry and assist in conducting research on tourism business development, collecting and analyzing data on emerging tourism industry opportunities, and develop forecasts to assist the tourism industry in advocating for business development. This position will work closely with the Tourism Department's Research Director to determine the best ways to grow business in the tourism industry, and will provide data analysis and insights to industry partners.
How does it get done?
- Researches and monitors trends in economic policy related to the tourism industry and researches issues which may affect tourism businesses throughout the State for use within the Tourism Department and the tourism industry.
- Develops and gives presentations on relevant findings.
- Responds to internal and external requests for information and maintains comprehensive datasets.
- Researches public policy, incentive structures and tax models then creates recommendations for the New Mexico Tourism industry based on business best practices.
- Works with communities to determine economic impact on local business of events or special activities related to tourism.
- Researches strategies for rural business development and uses Department and outside data to assist with tourism development projects throughout the State, including providing data for grant and funding opportunities.
- Provides regular statistical reports, summaries, and responds to requests for data from internal and external stakeholders.

This position serves the tourism industry partners, stakeholders throughout the State of New Mexico, as well a potential industry partners. It also provides assistance and insight to the New Mexico Tourism Department.
Ideal Candidate
- Demonstrates analytical knowledge of the New Mexico economy, including key industries and current trends.
- Has experience in forecasting and tracking revenue and constructing statistical models.
- Has tourism industry experience.
- Can extract meaningful insights from large/complex datasets.
Minimum Qualification
Associate's degree in Economics, Statistics or Business Administration and two (2) years of experience in database manipulation, statistical analysis or spreadsheet and/or statistical software usage. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
Working Conditions
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated August 12, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
In addition, employees working in State correctional facilities who have the potential for direct or indirect exposure to inmates are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Work is performed in an office setting. Extensive use of a personal computer. Some in-state travel may be required.
