Position will function as a Transportation Worker II in the Martin County Maintenance Unit based out of Williamston, NC. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices involved in road maintenance and construction activities, operation of a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, repairing pavements, assisting with pipe installation and other drainage tasks, inventorying materials, the operation of heavy equipment, and other assigned tasks. Applicants must have the ability to operate a small tandem dump truck. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to shoveling, raking, asphalt, flagging traffic, ditching and shrubbing. Position may be subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or extreme circumstances.
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
- Standard working knowledge of road maintenance and construction procedures policies
- Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace Safety policies
- Experience in at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor "A" boom mower, truck w/aerial device)
- Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance, or asphalt patching
Additional Expectations:
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel toe safety shoes will be needed. Employee will be expected to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. Position is subject to outside and inside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and oils. Visual acuity is required.

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire
