This position is a Vehicle Equipment Repair Technician III in the Brunswick County Equipment Shop. This position will perform at the highest level of diagnostic analysis and the most complex repairs to equipment. Work includes diagnosing and troubleshooting/repairing failures in microprocessor equipment systems. Diagnose and repair complex hydraulic and/or hydrostatic systems. Diagnose drivability problems in gasoline and diesel-powered equipment. Train/instruct technicians in diagnosing/ repairing the more complex systems using advanced equipment such as handheld engine analyzer and lap top computers. Pre- employment drug testing is required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with “N” endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) & a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed/signed allowing the NCDOT to check w/previous employers for the past 2 yrs about controlled substances/alcohol testing. Safety shoes required within 30 days of employment.

Qualified applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
- Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of two of the following; light, medium, heavy duty trucks and heavy equipment
- Experience in Heating and A/C repairs including electronic and vacuum controls
- Experience in performing electrical/ electronic diagnostics and repair of complex wiring on two of the following; light, medium, heavy duty trucks and heavy equipment
- Experience in performing hydraulic system diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds on a variety of equipment
- Experience in troubleshooting and repair of a minimum of two of the following; light, medium, heavy duty or farm equipment brake components
Knowledge and ability to perform a number of widely varying and diverse assignments that require in-depth analysis and diagnostic work. Knowledge to serve as a “technical expert” within the work unit and ability to guide and coach others. Thorough and extensive understanding of the most difficult and complex systems. Examples: diagnosis and overhaul of complex brake systems; diagnosis of electronic control system; overhaul of alternator; repair of wiring/computer related problems. Preferred: At least 5 years of experience in advanced technical work.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three (3) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year- for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
