Job Description:
Are you looking for a challenging opportunity to advance your career in forestry and make a significant impact on the forestry program for the southwestern area of Utah? If so, the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands is seeking a Southwest Area Forester to manage all aspects of forestry for Washington, Garfield, Kane, Iron and Beaver counties.
Principal Duties:
- Advise public owners and industries in the management, utilization, and protection of state and private resources including assessment of resources and anticipation/reconciliation of possible problems.
- Evaluates environmental factors relating to various aspects of operations.
- Adapts program(s) to meet specific needs or concerns.
- Develops and directs forestry management and land development programs.
- Analyzes summarizes and/or reviews data, report findings, interprets results and/or makes recommendations.
- Writes or drafts technical reports, management plans, articles or related material based on research, investigation or analysis.
- A Bachelors of Science degree in Forestry and/or natural resource management, environmental science or closely related natural resources/conservation field OR has a Bachelor's degree not related to natural resources but who has at least 5 yrs professional experience directly related to natural resource/conservation fields.
- A working knowledge of forestry management programs.

- A Bachelors of Science degree in Forestry and/or natural resource management, environmental science or closely related natural resources/conservation field OR has a Bachelor's degree not related to natural resources but who has at least 5 yrs professional experience directly related to natural resource/conservation fields.
- Knowledge of forest resource management and of forestry program(s) delivery, including Urban & Community Forestry.
- Advanced communication skills, including both oral and written skills, and experience addressing audiences of all types using various mediums.
- Knowledge of invasive species management.
- Skill and ability to operate off highway vehicles, such as ATV/UTV and/or snowmobiles.
- Knowledge of wildlife ecology and habitat requirements.
- Knowledge of principles, theories, and practices of fire fighting and fire prevention.
- Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
- Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
