The Office of the State Auditor seeks a qualified candidate to work as a Data Analyst. Incumbants in this position provide assistance and advanced knowledge in a variety of research projects, studies, evaluations, audits, and investigations. Incumbants typically analyze data: gather, clean, wrangle, integrate, and synthesize data for reporting purposes, analysis, and visualization. Incumbants work independently to resolve difficult and unusual problems requiring expert knowledge and experience interfacing with automated data systems and leadership/staff across many government types. They provide findings to the State Auditor and/or senior management, analyze significant and critical issues affecting the office or public policy.
Incumbants develop these recommendations in both written and verbal forms, which may impact governmental decisions, programs, regulations, etc. Incumbants may be required to acquire and utilize a wide range of research, analysis, and data science skill sets within small teams. Incumbants may be responsible for training others regarding specialized methods, techniques, or programming.
This position requires a four-year degree or equal experience in business, economics, statistics, mathematics, international relations, public policy, computer science, or other quantitative field is required.

Responsibilities In This Position Will Include The Following
- Collects data and reviews research materials, determine accuracy and validity of sources and appropriateness for use.
- Cleaning, wrangling and integrating data.
- Identifies data quality issues and contacts public entities and individuals to improve data quality.
- Performs statistical analysis using R; applies appropriate protocols in analyzing data and reaching accurate conclusions.
- Research and review financial records, reports, and all kinds of administrative records related to public education.
- Makes recommendations and presents findings to State Auditor and/or senior management/professionals.
- Manage and query data in databases using SQL.
- Interprets results, reviews and/or evaluates reports, documents, laws, rules, and regulations.
- Creates and maintains online interactive data dashboards that integrate data for relevant stakeholders primarily with R Shiny.
- Maintains detailed investigative and/or research records, including documentation of work performed.
- Communicates complex, technical information and ideas in non-technical terms both in writing and verbally.
- Works independently to execute projects or investigations as assigned.
- Experience with statistical programming languages; R is strongly preferred.
- Experience with R Shiny is preferred.
- Experience conducting research; research relating to the public sector is preferred.
- Ability to communicate complex, technical information and ideas in non-technical terms both in writing and verbally.
- Experience querying databases and SQL is preferred.
- Ability to create data visualizations using design best practices.
- Ability to establish and maintaining effective work relationships with employees, representatives of governments, and the public.
