The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Unit within the Information Technology Services Office (ITSO) at our Headquarters building in Lacey, WA is currently looking to fill a GIS Analyst & Data Specialist (IT Data Management Journey) position.  

The GIS Unit is a cross-functional team of 7 GIS professionals who are dedicated to providing valuable geospatial solutions, data, and support to staff and citizens to realized Ecology's mission. In this role, you will work in a supportive and professional environment with fantastic people who are passionate about the environment and GIS, understand the importance of work-life balance, and are focused on continual improvement and learning. You will contribute to two specific projects assisting our Water Resources Program and Shorelands and Environmental Assistance Program by providing data management and analysis on watersheds of Washington.  You will work closely with internal and external customers, design a database and methodology to collect and store water resources information by watershed, and provide consultation and analysis on our Watershed Characterization model.  Your work will directly support science and policy that is focused on making measurable improvements in the environment of the State of Washington.

An individual who has extensive technical data management and analyst skills using ArcGIS and Microsoft SQl/Server suite of tools

Some of the key work activities of the GIS Analyst & Data Specialist position include: 

This project position is responsible for designing. Maintaining, and managing spatial databases in order to support decision making for water resources and watershed characterization across the State. 

  • Gather business requirements to design a database structure for Water Resources Program.
  • Design physical storage structure and develop SQL database using SOL Management Studio tools.
  • Compile, standardize, and insert water resource datasets for new database.
  • Maintain, update, and manage Watershed Characterization GIS data and models.
  • Perform quality control on new and existing data.
 
Maintain, support, and improve models for Watershed Characterization.
 
  • Maintain and run current models within Esri Model Builder.
  • Develop Python scripts to replace models from Model Builder.
  • Perform quality control of model outputs.
 
Design and develop story maps and publish and maintain underlying data for maps.
 
  • Work with program staff and communications to interpret WRIA information and datasets.
  • Develop web maps and story maps which utilize ArcGIS Online to communicate the data and information for WRIAs and Watershed Characterization.
  • Collaborate on writing templates for story maps or other publications and provide review/editing support.


This recruitment will remain open until filled. Required Qualifications:
 
An Associate's degree or higher in Computer Science; Information Technology OR completion of a two (2) year accredited vocational training program in information technology or related program

AND

Two (2) years of recent professional level experience using Esri ArcGIS technology (ArcGIS Desktop and Server, ArcGIS Online and ArcSDE products). Experience includes but is not limited to: analyzing, designing, implementing, maintaining and/or programming medium to large scale software applications.
 
OR

Four (4) years of recent professional level experience using Esri ArcGIS technology (ArcGIS Desktop and Server, ArcGIS Online and ArcSDE products). Experience includes but is not limited to: analyzing, designing, implementing, maintaining and/or programming medium to large scale software applications.
 
 
Desired Qualifications: 

  • A Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, or environmental science.
  • Two years of professional experience designing and maintaining spatial databases. This experience can be gained in conjunction with other requirements.
  • Familiarity with commonly accepted IT industry standards and best practices.
    Demonstrated initiative to improve skills through training or other learning opportunities.
