The Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) is looking for a Juvenile Rehabilitation Counselor 2 to join our team to delivery of community reentry planning and services for youth who are reintegrating back to their communities.
The Opportunity:
We need your motivation and engagement to join our team located in our regional office located in Everett, WA to support juvenile counseling services, working toward the common goal of disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline. You will provide aftercare services to youth on supervision and their families to support successful transition and reentry, while adhering to established parole aftercare Guidelines.
Some of what you will do:
- Conduct interviews and administer/interpret assessments to determine risk, required level of care/supervision, and referral for indicated treatment services.
- Work independently to fulfill reporting and law enforcement school/victim witness notification timeframes and case management requirements identified in JR Policies and related statutes and rules.
- Prepare cases for presentation at staffing, consultations, court proceedings and administrative hearings related to parole revocations.
- Arrest or facilitate the arrest of youth when required using compliant cuffing method and install and remove electronic monitoring (EM) devices and assist in interpretation of reported information.
- Provide guidance and support to Juvenile Rehabilitation Counselor 1s (JRC1) as necessary.
- Participate in reentry planning and attend reentry Team Meetings beginning when youth is in a residential setting.
- Engage residential staff and youth/families when developing parole contracts stipulating behavior supervision and treatment expectations for youth.
- Remain calm and in control during crisis/dangerous situations and intervene to de-escalate using JR approved methods and techniques.
- Identify, teach, and assist families to connect with appropriate services and resources matching to the family.
- Assess youth behavior for risk to self or community and required level of care and take steps to reduce risk according to established JR guidelines.
- Schedule transportation of clients to assigned residential programs.
- Maintain Professional standards and boundaries when working with youth and families.
Required Qualifications:
Equivalent combination of education and experience, totaling five years.
OR
Experience at the Juvenile Rehabilitation Counselor Assistant (JRCA) or Juvenile Rehabilitation Counselor 1 (JRC1) that meets the 5-years of experience requirement.
OR
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, AND one year of professional experience working with at-risk or justice system involved youth as a case manager; counselor; probation or parole officer; or in a social services capacity planning, directing, supervising, or facilitating interventions with at-risk or juvenile justice system youth or a related field
Note: A master’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Social Sciences, or in an allied field will substitute for the one year of experience.
Note: A degree in Social Work must be from and educational program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
Degree must be obtained from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or foreign equivalent verified by a NACES-approved organization at naces.org.
Foreign equivalency certification must be attached to the application for degrees obtained outside the U.S. Incomplete applications may be screened out of the recruitment process.
In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:
Previously demonstrated understanding of, ability to, knowledge in or experience with:
- Adolescent development and juvenile rehabilitation practices and principles.
- Providing cognitive/behavioral therapeutic interventions.
- A trauma informed care approach.
- Effectively communicating verbally and in writing with management, coworkers, clients and community stakeholders.
- Relating to clients from diverse backgrounds and cultural groups.
