Court Commissioner

Rock County, located in South Central Wisconsin, population of 160,000, is recruiting a professional, Court Commissioner. The mission of this department is to protect individual's rights, privileges and liberties, to maintain the rule of law, and to provide a forum for the resolution of disputes that is fair, accessible, independent and effective.

The Rock County Circuit Court is seeking a full-time Circuit Court Commissioner. The position requires presiding all types of hearings handled by the Court Commissioner pursuant to Wisconsin Statutes and as assigned by the Rock County Court Judges, with emphasis on criminal and small claims matters.

This is a challenging professional position for an individual who possesses:

• A thorough knowledge and understanding of circuit court legal proceedings
• Extensive knowledge and understanding of pertinent judicial procedures
• Skill in analyzing and appraising facts, evidence and applying legal principles
• The capacity to manage full caseloads under time pressures
• The ability to work effectively and harmoniously with judges, staff, attorneys, litigants and the general public

$94,022.64-$114,318.00. Position is benefit eligible.

• General mobility, including occasional use of stairs
• Occasional bending, kneeling and reaching
• Lifting and carrying approximately 10 pounds
• Sitting for long periods of time

Working conditions:

• Outdoor-rarely; primarily as a result of travel requirements to & from the office, and other meeting sites in the community

• Potential for contact with unpredictable and/or violent members of the public

On-call status may be required on weekends or otherwise for issuance of warrants, and review of arrests within the legally mandated time limits.

The following are required for this position:

• Graduation from an accredited law school
• Admission to practice law in the State of Wisconsin, good standing with the State Bar of Wisconsin
• At least three years’ experience as an attorney
• Extensive knowledge of the types of criminal, family, and small claims hearings conducted by court commissioners, and comprehensive understanding of courtroom practice
• Complete and a pass criminal background check
