General Description
Working under minimal supervision will develop and build custom prototypes and models to support engineering in the design and fabrication of custom and/or pre-production product samples. Performs a wide variety of welding and sheet metal fabrication-related activities. Collaborates with designers and engineers during the development and design process of new and modified products. During the implementation of new or modified products into production will recommend and assist with welding and metal fabrication improvements and processes. Will work closely with other skilled trades and model builders in the area to develop innovative ideas related to welding/sheet metal fabrication and building new prototypes and models. Is motivated to provide the best cost and quality approach to all assigned projects.
Skills/Abilities
- Ability to set up and run all of the machines in the tooling department such as (but not limited to) planer, mill, surface grinder, and CNC machines. May also require the programming of CNC equipment
- Must possess math skills and the ability to operate machinery necessary to produce results within acceptable standards
- Ability to read part prints, and die prints and set machine speeds and feeds, as required to produce accurate dimensions
- Demonstrated ability to verify dimensional requirements of work produced
- Thorough knowledge of the welding (resistance, metal inert gas [MIG], tungsten inert gas [TIG], Shielded Metal Arc Welding [Stick], Flux Core Arc Welding [Wire Wheel Welding], and Resistance Welding [Spot Welding]).
- Thorough knowledge of sheet metal and other metal fabrication (i.e., sheet metal formation, break forming, notching, cutting, piercing, drilling, rolling, stretching).
- Knowledge and experience of welding and fabrication with different metal materials. (Sheet Steel, Stainless and Carbon Steel, Aluminum, Chrome, Pipe and Plate)
- Understanding of the fundamentals of automatic welding machine and equipment processes.
- Understanding of the fundamentals of industrial sheet and metal fabrication and forming. (use of dies, forming tools, automatic and progressive die equipment, etc.)
- Strong capabilities in hand forming and creation of custom shapes with ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
- Welding knowledge and experience with soldering and brazing.
- Proficient in recognizing most common weld and sheet metal defects and restoring/returning equipment/processes back to outputting acceptable quality and specifications.
- Performs complex welding and metal fabrication per engineering direction.
- Able to discern for weld deficiencies with appropriate test methods and procedures.
- Reads and comprehends drawings and specifications. (two and three-dimensional drawings/sketches)
- Maintains responsibility for all welding and sheet metal tools and equipment assigned to the working area.
- Ability to read labels, safety warnings and guidelines.
- Ability to receive and follow instructions and communicate with co-workers.
- Always attentive to detail and alert to ensure safety.
- Able to occasionally lift 50 lbs. from floor to waist; lift 35 lbs. from waist to shoulders; and push / pull up to 15 lbs.
- Has knowledge and the ability to use measuring tools (calipers, linear measuring machine, fixtures etc.) to ensure that parts are within quality specifications.
General knowledge of other shop equipment and their uses. (Grinders, Sanders, Saws, Punches, Presses, Press Brakes, etc.)
Education/Experience
- Prefer AWS weld certifications (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW)
- Ability to use MS Office platforms (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- 2 year associates degree preferred or commensurate work experience.
- 3-5 years of hands-on welding experience in a manufacturing environment
- Prefer the completion of a journeyman's apprenticeship program as approved by the Dept of Labor.
