Position: Education Advocate

Hours: Non-exempt, Part-time 20 hours per week

Salary- $18.00/Hour

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education-related or human services field, or equivalent experience working with or negotiating the education system for children with disabilities.

  • Experience with conflict resolution and mediation preferred

  • Ability to multi-task, plan and prioritize work tasks, and work effectively in both a team and individual setting.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.

  • Ability to effectively interact and work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Valid Drivers License and proof of insurance

  • Strong belief in and commitment to the inclusion of children with disabilities in the regular classroom, with adequate supports.

Responsibilities

  • Actively support STIC’s mission, philosophy, and values and our pursuit of community integration for all people with disabilities.

  • Required travel in Broome, Chenango & Tioga Counties.

  • Knowledge of IDEA and related education laws/regulations, and the CSE/CPSE process as well as familiarity with programs and services available to children with disabilities.

  • Keep apprised of any changes to applicable education-related laws/regulations and notify consumers, STIC staff, etc. as appropriate.

  • Advise families of children with disabilities about their rights under various education laws/regulations, attend CPSE/CSE meetings, assist families with the IEP process, and advocate for the inclusion of needed support services in their education plans in order to meet their children’s specific education-related needs in the most appropriate inclusive setting.

  • Assist parents with due process procedures to obtain needed services for their children by attending superintendent and manifestation hearings, mediation, and filing complaints with the State Education Department as necessary.

  • Provide testimony at public hearings and/or in writing, on potential changes to laws/regulations and their impact on children with disabilities.

  • Make presentations to various groups about education-related issues, STIC services, etc.

  • Attend all mandatory agency trainings, meetings, in-house sign language class and advocacy groups.

  • Submit reports and statistical data as required, in a comprehensive and timely manner.
