SRI is seeking committed and passionate professionals to provide clinical preceptorship support of Navy Drug and Alcohol School trainers/staff.

Overview: The Navy Drug and Alcohol Counselor School (NDACS) employs Navy Alcohol and Drug Counselors in the non-clinical function as instructor/advisors, training students to be Navy Alcohol and Drug Counselors. Clinical Preceptorship is a tutorial process in which a person with expertise and skills is responsible for training and evaluating the performance of another person. The Clinical Consultant is essentially the Preceptor for the NDACS staff. The Clinical Consultant is responsible for providing NDACS staff with guidance, instructions, and recommendations for interacting with the students during experiential and didactic training exercises. The clinical consultant provides NDACS instructors support in accurately assessing each student's progress and facilitates each instructor in assessing their own progress in developing and demonstrating the skills, insights, attitudes and behaviors needed in a drug and alcohol counselor training environment.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Directly observe counselors providing services in the designated performance domains in order to effectively assess counselor competence and provide input for the Individual Development Plan (IDP). May require audio/video recording of sessions.
  • Provide direct or indirect observation (indirect observation via email, telephone, and video monitoring is utilized when direct/in-person is infeasible) of counseling sessions, case review, education and training and group supervision.
  • Provide feedback and documentation to assist Navy Drug and Alcohol Counselors to focus on achieving competency standards and ensures quality patient care is provided by competent drug and alcohol counselors.
  • Assess and develop each counselor’s skills using an IDP to document strengths, weaknesses, goals, and methods to be utilized in achieving those goals.
  • Construct reports on the number of clinical preceptorship and professional development/education hours provided to each counselor at each Navy site.
  • Provide direct training services to counselors, submit designated reports, maintain designated records, and evaluate counselor competency.

Required Skills, Education, Experience & Abilities:

  • Possess a desire and compassion for supervising, guiding, and assisting individuals.
  • Minimum of a master’s degree in behavioral sciences from an accredited college or university.
  • Currently licensed or certified and actively engaged in the provision of clinical services in either mental health or substance abuse use disorder treatment within the last two years
  • Minimum seven years full-time direct counseling experience with patients with substance abuse disorders.
  • Minimum four years as a clinical supervisor, supervising/guiding other counselors who have a caseload in which at least 50% of the clients were identified with a primary diagnosis of a substance abuse disorder.
  • Must be able to commute to and from appropriate place of performance.
  • Experience safeguarding confidential information and complying with the Privacy Act and applicable regulations on individual privacy.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a DBIDS or other base access background check, as determined by local base security policies.
  • S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident; must have resided in the U.S. or its Territories for three of last five years, except as related to Federal Employment; Federal or Civilian Sponsorship.
