Summary:
Performs routine and standard laboratory tests and procedures on various biological specimens, following procedures and instructions as outlined in procedure manual(s) using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation and equipment to assist the physician in diagnosis and treatment of patients.Minimum Qualifications:
Formal Education Required:
- Associate Degree in Laboratory Science from an accredited junior or community college including training in an approved program, or equivalent, with certification or eligibility with accredited recognized agency or organization (e.g., ASCP, AMT, etc.).
- Minimum of 12 continuing education credits are required to be completed each calendar year for continued employment.
OR
- Undergraduate degree in Science (biology, chemistry, nursing) and successful completion of medical laboratory technician trainee role.
Certifications:
- Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or certification eligible from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), preferred.
Experience and Training Required:
- Ability to read, comprehend, and follow standard laboratory procedures and instructions.
- Use of computers or ability to acquire such skills to operate application packages used by department.
Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:
- Manual dexterity sufficient to calibrate, operate and perform preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
- Ability to work under stress, communicate test results to physicians, nursing units and/or other authorized personnel.
- Assumes accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with customer service policy.
- Population Specific Competency: Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients/customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity.
Level of Physical Demands:
- Medium: Exerts 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or ten to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force continuously to move objects.
Salary : $35,400 - $44,800
