Job Description
Under general supervision, performs skilled labor in the maintenance of Town’s drainage systems. Work involves transporting equipment and material to job sites, digging ditches, building catch basins, laying pipe, etc.; and may perform work clearing rights-of-ways and other special projects as assigned. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Maintenance Construction Supervisor, Stormwater Manager, coworkers, other Town employees, and the general public.
Job Responsibilities
Performs general labor on the maintenance and construction of drainage systems, piping, etc.
Drives trucks and trailers requiring a Class “A” or “Z” commercial driver’s license (employee will have six (6) months from date of hire to obtain required CDL).
Cuts grass, trees, and brush as needed to clear and/or maintain rights-of-ways using a bush hog.
Conducts general duties such as cleaning up around assigned areas, maintaining equipment, performing loading and unloading of supplies and equipment, painting, etc.
Provides assistance as necessary in emergency situations and during afterhours or inclement weather conditions.
Provides assistance to coworkers as required to promote safety and efficiency; may be assigned to orient and train new employees in the performance of job duties.
Receives and/or reviews various forms, reports, correspondence, policies, directories, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation such as grade readings, measurements, mileage, etc.
Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation associated with department operations, per established procedures and within designated timeframes; reviews various documentation for accuracy and completeness; distributes/issues various documentation.
Refers to operations manual, safety manual, policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publication and reference texts, etc.
Operates a variety of equipment and machinery such as truck, trailer, excavator, backhoe, bulldozer, tractor, etc.
Uses a variety of tools such as grading instruments, water pumps, power saws, manual digging tools, pruning instruments, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as pipe, prefabricated structure, brick, cement, textile fabric, etc.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Education and Experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Stormwater Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Motor Equipment Operator III.
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in drainage construction and maintenance work.
Knowledge of the proper specifications and standards applicable to the work performed.
Knowledge of how to clean, repair and maintain a variety of machines and equipment to promote safe and efficient operations.
Knowledge of and skilled in the utilization of a variety of machinery, tools, and equipment necessary to complete daily tasks.
Knowledge of how to communicate in an effective manner with all levels of management and other persons.
Knowledge of the established standards of productivity and quality of work to be maintained in the performance of the job.
Ability to properly and safely operate and maintain equipment, machinery and tools used in maintaining, installing, and repairing assigned areas of the department.
Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Ability to read, understand, and interpret service requests and job assignments.
Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions and complete work in a timely manner.
Ability to apply common sense understanding and use independent judgment in fairly routine situations.
Ability to work in extreme weather conditions including smoke, dust, heat, cold, wetness, etc.
Ability to handle required mathematical calculations.
Ability to organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
Physical Requirements
Must be physically able to operate a truck, tractor, and numerous small tools and equipment. Must be able to exert in excess of one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of fifty pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of twenty pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of ten to one hundred pounds.
