Summary of Position
The Technical Editor is responsible for ensuring accuracy in formatting, grammar, spelling, tense, punctuation, citations, and readability of technical and scientific deliverables per Sundance's guidelines and client style guides and requirements. The Technical Editor produces high-quality documentation meeting applicable standards and that is appropriate for its intended audience.
Responsibilities
- Edit scientific project documents (e.g., Phase I Environmental Site Assessment Reports, Environmental Impact Statements, Quality Assurance Project Plans) and complex proposal documents for language, content, and compliance issues.
- Proofread documents for grammatical accuracy and coherence.
- Perform substantive editing to address accuracy and completeness of technical information, grammar, and ensure that documents are appropriate for the intended audience.
- Suggest text revisions to enhance clarity, tone, persuasiveness, and effectiveness of presentation.
- Format documents, including figures, tables, appendices, automated tables of contents, margins, pagination, headers/footers, footnotes, automated captions, and automated styles.
- Prepare and compile documents from multiple sources (and formats) in Adobe Acrobat (PDF), including bookmarking, application of headers/footers, pagination, and property changes.
- Ensure adherence to Sundance's established document control and Scientific and Technical Editing Standard Operating Procedures, checklists, and styles.
- Assist Sales & Marketing Team with creating, editing, and organizing corporate documents.
- Collaborate with Marketing Manager, other technical editors, project and/or proposal team members, and relevant others, as needed.
Qualifications
Required:
- Experience within the last 3 years editing scientific and technical documents for one or more of the following clients: Fort Wingate Depot Activity, Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico Environment Department, US Army Corps of Engineers, US Department of Agriculture (and its bureaus), US Department of the Interior (and its bureaus). Note relevant agencies/bureaus and type of experience/documents edited in resume.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills and attention to detail.
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Word and Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Knowledge and basic experience in 508 Compliance.
- Proficiency using industry-standard style guides.
- Ability to prepare documents for audience-targeted readability (e.g., general public, client-specific, regulatory authorities).
- Skilled in multitasking and working under strict and occasionally aggressive deadlines.
Added Value:
- Bachelor's Degree in English, technical editing, or relevant scientific field.
- Technical translation capabilities (e.g., English to Spanish, English to Navajo).
