Vice President Tax Position
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Tax & Financial Operations, this tax leadership position will be responsible for the enterprise-wide leadership and drive Sunnova global tax strategy including tax compliance, tax provision and tax planning. This person will work closely with Sunnova’s functional leadership in accounting, finance, legal and project teams to support the overall financial objectives of the organization. This person’s success in the role will also be measured by the tax group’s ability to scale with the organization as appropriate. Ideal candidates will have exceptional financial and business acumen and will bring commercial judgment, creativity, and proven leadership to a growing tax team.
\n- Manage Sunnova global tax functions including compliance, planning, statutory reporting, and tax forecasts
- Responsible for all ASC740, ASC 450 tax provision work and the accuracy and completeness of all SEC disclosures
- Lead cross functional initiatives and manage tax team
- Provide oversight on contractual arrangements entered into by the company as well as reviews purchase agreements, investment agreements and distribution agreements from a tax disclosure and tax due diligence standpoint
- Provide active support, advising leadership in strategic decision-making, due diligence, mergers/acquisitions and lead tax strategy globally, assessing the tax impact of strategic initiatives
- Provide tax guidance on project financing partnership structures and other tax due diligence, buy and sell-side tax due diligence projects; design and development of transaction structures; assessment of corporate tax attributes including historical tax basis, earnings and profits, and limitations applicable to net operating losses and tax credits
- Lead legal entity rationalization, tax equity buy-out and application of consolidated return regulations
- Serve in industry tax initiatives as they relate to renewable industry
- Manage tax equity initiatives including transferability
- Build working relationships with internal and external partners and collaborate on initiatives with an understanding of mutual respect. Work in partnership with chief accounting officer, controller, VP of FP&A, Treasurer, Financial Market VP, Legal, etc
- Manage global transfer pricing to ensure the allocation of profits is appropriate.
- Lead initiatives to optimize cash taxes in all jurisdictions
- Manage budget for outside advisors and ensure that projects are being conducted on time and within budget
- A bachelor's degree, preferably with an emphasis in accounting, finance, economics or a related field
- CPA
- 15 years’ experience with tax planning, research, and compliance
- 6 years of highly specialized subject matter experience
- 5 years’ managing multiple, direct reports
- 4 years of public accounting experience
- Prior experience with tax provision
- Experience with M&A due diligence and integration, structuring transactions, including financing transactions and tax equity is required.
- Strong experience in Subchapter K of the Internal Revenue Code and hypothetical liquidation at book value (“HLBV”)
- Master’s degree in accounting or taxation
- Previous experience in energy, and in particular, residential solar
- Strong experience and proficiency in data analytics tools
- Prior tax controversy experience
- Positive, self-motivated and can-do personality – growth mindset essential
- Very organized and strong verbal and written communication.
- Ability to manage multiple projects while working under pressure and with
- time constraints
- Ethical team player; always maintains the highest degree of integrity

- Overtime may be required during busy compliance times
