Sussan, Greenwald & Wesler, a firm dedicated to representing students in special education matters is seeking an Associate to join our practice. Applicants must have a passion for advocacy. The position offers the opportunity to work on a wide variety of matters in special education litigation involving the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that includes assisting in the development of appropriate Individual Education Programs (IEPs), representing parents at mediations facilitated by the Office of Special Education, and due process hearings before the Office of Administrative Law.

Essential functions include, but are not limited to the below:
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work professionally with court officials, judges, attorneys and parents, experts and to maintain effective working relationships.
- Drafting of pleadings including Petitions for Due Process, Mediation requests and Applications for Emergent relief which are filed through the Department of Education.
- Attendance at meetings, mediation conferences, Due Process Hearings and Emergent Relief hearings.
- Collaboration with experts.
- Strong writing skills.
- Research and interpret facts and law dealing with intricate programs and situations.
- Perform analysis and make or suggest opinions dealing with highly complex issues that impact client.
- Research and prepare memoranda on a variety of legal issues.
- Represent clients in legal proceedings that may involve court appearances, mediations, hearings and meetings.
- Maintain a high level of proficiency in the most current and advanced legal techniques.
Requirements
- Law degree from an accredited law school with admission to New Jersey Bar.
- 0-3 years experience in handling special education and related matters.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in oral and written form with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently, efficiently and to establish work priorities.
- Ability to interface effectively with a variety of professionals.
- Ability to work within established systems and processes involving extensive collaboration with other attorneys, paralegals, and office staff.
- Self-motivated.
