Position Overview:
Working under the direction of the Environmental Services Manager and Supervisor, Operations Manager or other supervisory or lead personnel, the Service Assistant assures the cleanliness and comfort of our patients and their environment. The Service Assistant provides a safe, clean and sanitary physical patient care environment. The Service Assistant is also trained to be able to respond to patient call lights and assists with hospitality services and basic, comfort measures (e.g. providing blankets, informing the nurse assigned to that patient of the patients specific needs and room temperature adjustment).

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES
CLEANING:
• Provides daily cleaning for all patient care, and support areas, offices, hallways and all other areas that require regular cleaning
• Maintains clear hallways to comply with fire code.
• Cleans refrigerators weekly.
• Removes all recycled material as needed.
• Cleans occupied patient rooms daily and completes Check out and patient transfers room cleaning as needed. Documents check out cleaning on check out form.
• Cleans IV poles and commodes daily.
• Changes sharps containers when ¾ full and glove boxes as needed.
• Cleans conference rooms and offices weekly as assigned.
• Maintains housekeeping carts in safe and clean condition. Maintains appropriate labels on all cleaning chemicals. Maintains appropriate amounts of housekeeping supplies in the departments.
• Distribute clean linen to the patient care areas and removes soiled linen and trash every shift and as needed when ¾ full.
• Properly handles and disposes of medical waste.
• Cleans all room furniture, surfaces and equipment on scheduled basis e.g., walls and doors, night stand, overbed table, TV light fixtures, monitors and cords, chairs, window blinds, ceiling vents, fans, trash containers, carts, etc. Checks the cleanliness of room cubicle curtains and change as needed.
• Attempts to locate lost items and generate appropriate documentation for lost patient items.
• Cleans rooms within 30 minutes of discharge or as coordinated with Clinical Team Leader and the needs of the team.
• Wipes down wheelchairs and gurneys after each use.
• Maintains security of housekeeping cart, including proper placement of cleaning chemicals and storage of carts.
• Complete deep cleaning activities to include, floor care, strip and refinish floors, carpet cleaning, wall washing, terminal cleaning of isolation rooms.
MAINTAINS SAFETY:
• Uses equipment and chemicals properly.
• Utilizes correct body mechanics.
• Wears appropriate protective personal equipment
•Observe appropriate procedures when cleaning isolation or other specialized treatment care areas.
COMMUNICATIONS:
• Responds to requests or beeper calls within 5 minutes.
• Checks with nursing staff or patient care team members regarding patient's special needs in regard to cleaning activities in the room.
• Notifies nursing staff or patient care team members immediately of patient needs.
• Advises nursing staff or patient care team members of whereabouts, i.e.: when leaving and upon returning to the unit.
• Inform the department what beeper number they may be reached at.
• Informs supervisor of daily activities, special cleaning issues or department and patient needs.
EDUCATION
Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.
HS Diploma or equivalent education/experience
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AS TYPICALLY ACQUIRED IN:
Cleaning in an Institutional or health care environment setting experience preferred.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Ability to read, write and speak English.
Ability to read and follow job specifications, direction and cleaning chemical label instructions.
Principles of body mechanics.
Excellent customer service skills required.
Good interpersonal communication skills are required.
Read, speak and write English required. Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
Willingness and ability to learn tasks required through on-the-job training such as the operation of mechanized cleaning equipment.
Demonstrated commitment to customer service, quality, and to the mission and values of Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa.
Pay Range: 22.37-27.80
The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate's experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
