Job Description
The College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks a web developer with full stack web development skills with a focus on front-end user experience. The position is based in the college’s Office of Communications and is primarily responsible for overseeing the daily management of vpa.syr.edu, the college’s main external-facing WordPress website, ensuring the site’s stability, security, responsiveness, accessibility, functionality, performance, and quality. This position works closely with the Office of Communications team, particularly the web content manager, to help define vision and strategy for the college’s overall web presence when implementing web solutions.

In addition, the position is responsible for the development, maintenance, and support of the college’s microsites and any future web solutions development and scoping. The position helps to assess and manage web-related requests from various stakeholders, particularly faculty members, and provides web-related support for the college’s digital marketing campaigns. The position is also responsible for the college’s digital signage presence, including development and content integrations, and assists the web content manager with custom code for form functionality (currently Frevvo) in support of the college’s administrative offices.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, web programming, or related field.

  • Three (3) plus years of relevant experience developing web-based software solutions.

  • Experience in higher education and an affinity for the arts is preferred.

Job Specific Qualifications
  • Experience with a variety of CMS systems; proficiency with WordPress preferred.

  • Proficient knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, Sass, Responsive Web Design, and JavaScript. Git, Bootstrap and jQuery a plus.

  • Proficient knowledge of server-side scripting languages such as PHP.

  • Experience coding by hand (no reliance on plugins or WYSIWYG editors).

  • Experience prototyping, designing, and launching new web features.

  • Considerable knowledge of Web standards for accessibility, including W3C, WCAG, and Section 508.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the capacity to assimilate previously unfamiliar software solutions.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work with diverse user groups.

  • Previous experience with template design, content management, and scheduling for digital signage a plus.

Responsibilities
For vpa.syr.edu, the college’s main website:
  • Design, develop, test, maintain, and improve the site.

  • Collaborate with the communications team to prototype, design, and launch new features.

  • Ensure UI/UX designs meet user needs.

  • Ensure an accessible and inclusive UI that meets WCAG AA standards.

  • Oversee daily maintenance to assure stability, security, responsiveness, accessibility, functionality, performance, and quality.

  • Conduct regular user testing to inform improvements in user experience.

  • Improve SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and identify ways to increase website traffic with web content manager.

  • Implement any necessary CMS platform updates, migrations, etc.

  • Communicate with Syracuse University’s platform architects to resolve and improve performance and security issues related to the website’s server.

Additionally:
  • Help define vision, strategy, and roadmap for the college’s overall web presence.

  • Development, maintenance, and support of the college’s WordPress microsites or any necessary short-term sites.

  • Assess and manage all web development-related requests from various stakeholders in conjunction with the Office of Communications.

  • Creation and maintenance of college’s web-based forms and workflows system.

  • Develop content integrations and support the college’s digital signage presence (currently FourWinds).
