Handyman education and training requirements

Training and certifications requirements for a Handyman will vary by state. Some states require that anyone who performs functions related to an Electrician, Plumber or HVAC Technician be licensed. This certification requirement may include a General Contractor’s license. A high school diploma or GED is often preferred for a Handyman role, but not always required.

What settings does a Handyman typically work in?

There are various settings a Handyman may work in depending on where they’re employed. If they work primarily for homeowners, they’ll regularly arrive at people’s houses to conduct general maintenance on whatever the client requests. This can include maintenance on kitchen appliances, plumbing repairs and door window or roof repair.

Some Handymen work for offices or organizations, performing maintenance on items all around the building. They may work in an office setting, making sure the area is clean and that all appliances are functioning properly. There are also Handymen who work for educational institutions, performing maintenance on cafeteria items, like fridges, microwaves or ovens.

What's the difference between a Handyman and a Contractor?

Though they both specialize in fixing certain items for their customers, there are some key differences between a Handyman and a Contractor when it comes to their skill set and expertise. Handymen complete basic repair tasks that don’t require a license, permit or advanced degree to complete.

Contractors often earn an education in repairing certain items and are licensed in fixing these items as well. They’ll often earn a Contract Specialty License that qualifies them to install or provide repairs on various equipment pieces like HVAC, plumbing or electrical systems if the problem is complex and requires advanced knowledge and understanding.

What makes a good Handyman?

A good Handyman should be a hard worker and dedicated to correctly fixing as many items as possible each day. Since they’re regularly on their feet or bent over repairing items, Handymen should have great physical stamina to ensure they’re able to properly conduct their tasks.

They should also have a wide variety of basic skills and knowledge when fixing different kinds of appliances and items around a house or business office. Handymen should also have extensive experience and knowledge working with various power tools and hardware equipment.
