What are the responsibilities and job description for the K-12 Truancy Officer position at Teach Iowa?
- Interpret the Iowa State Code, court rulings, and student handbooks relating to student attendance issues.
- Gather and review attendance data to identify students who are excessively unexcused or truant to school.
- Establish effective communication with students, parents/guardians, and staff regarding attendance, academic achievement, familial relationships, and other problems by phone, attendance letters, and home visits.
- Collaborate with school staff to develop interventions for students who are unexcused or truant and develop individualized service plans to improve attendance.
- Serve as a liaison between FMCSD schools and such agencies as social services, court services, the Fort Madison Police Department, School Resource Officer and county attorney’s office regarding student attendance.
- Transport or arrange transportation for families and individuals requiring attendance support under the direction of an administrator.
- Initiate legal proceedings to enforce compulsory attendance laws; prepare information for formal hearings and/or court cases; and represent FMCSD at court interagency staffings and in the courtroom.
- Provide families with information related to the needs of their child and act as a resource to parents/guardians by providing family support and communicating the importance of school attendance.
- Maintains necessary records ensuring strict confidentiality of students and their families and prepare related reports.
- Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
- Knowledge of federal and state statutes as they relate to education.
