Introduction to the Job
The role of the Buyer is to assess and respond to the Materials Requirements Plan (MRP) which represents known and forecasted Customer demand. The Buyer is responsible for the procurement of goods and services as assigned, to ensure that quality, cost-effective products are delivered in a timely manner per MRP. Executes procurement process in accordance with Company business controls and other relevant government requirements and restrictions.
Job description
- Works under intermediate supervision, with predetermined standards to ensure that materials and/or supplies are purchased in accordance with company policies and procedures.
- Reviews purchase requests for assigned material or components and verify nomenclature and specifications.
- Gains product knowledge and begins learning more advanced purchasing concepts, practices, and procedures through research and additional training. Demonstrates strong part commodity knowledge.
- Creates and releases purchase orders for items covered by previously negotiated contracts in conformance with current local and corporate operating procedures.
- Works with product teams or other procurement staff to generate Request for Quotations (RFQ’s) for new or modified parts.
- Corresponds with or interviews approved suppliers to obtain price, specifications, and delivery information.
- Strengthen the overall supply chain by researching and working with Senior Buyer(s) or the Procurement Engineer to source suppliers for new items.
- Expedites delivery by contacting vendors and shippers to ensure that merchandise, supplies, and equipment are forwarded on a specified shipping date.
- May assist other departments with problem resolution involving differences between purchase orders and delivered item, quantity, and/or price.
- Maintains and tracks computerized procurement records such as items or services purchased, costs, delivery of the product, and quality or performance. Prepares summaries used to evaluate supplier performance and Department performance to SQDC goals and objectives.
- Makes recommendations for process improvements to workflow leading to departmental overall cost improvements and efficiency.
- Assists other staff members with procurement-related activities as assigned.
- Additional requirements may be added as needed to meet changing business demands.
ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

- Technical, metallurgical, or engineering background helpful.
- Routinely requires decisions that involve some judgment to determine a course of action that is consistent with established functional policies and goals covered by general procedures.
- Contributes to a positive work environment adhering to the company’s Code of Business Conduct and Foundational Beliefs.
- Exposure to mainframe system (Visibility) preferred.
You are meant for this job if
- BA degree in Business Administration, Procurement, Operations or related field preferred.
- Minimum of three years experience in purchasing or materials management.
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously, and follow through on issues in a timely manner.
- User Expert Level computer skills including SharePoint, Microsoft Office software to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Office (preferably Office 2007), and Adobe Acrobat.
- Attention to detail in composing, typing, and proofing materials, establishing priorities, and meeting deadlines.
- Must demonstrate strong planning and interpersonal skills to interact with suppliers and co-workers in a team-based environment.
- Demonstrated effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks in a high-stress environment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, listen and speak.
- Frequent need for manual dexterity – using hands, fingers, and arms to push, pull, reach, grab, hold, and lift.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Regularly required to sit & stand for long periods of time.
- Frequent use of PC is required.
- Close visual acuity is required to perform activities such as viewing computer screens and reading.
- Wear steel toe shoes, safety glasses, and other personal protective equipment as needed in safety zone areas.
