POSITION SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs specialized and skilled work in the operation of heavy and light equipment for constructing, maintaining, repairing and improving County roads; may lead a crew; some physical labor may also be required.

(1) Perform specialized and technical procedures in road and bridge maintenance and construction; operate heavy and light equipment and trucks in all phases of road and bridge construction, maintenance and improvements; as well as during emergency situations.
(2) Responsible for the proficient operation of a variety of heavy and light equipment in emergency situations including snow removal and other weather or disaster related incidents.
(3) Maintain equipment in proper working condition; locate and repair mechanical problems when able, perform preventive maintenance on equipment and maintain records of such.
(4) Responsible for proper care of assigned equipment.
(5) Train other employees in the operation of equipment and safety standards.
(6) Responsible for keeping service center, building and grounds in a clean and orderly condition
(7) Assist Field Supervisor/Crew Leader with required monthly reports, time sheets and any other tasks to be performed.
(8) Attend safety and job training classes.
(9) Act as Crew Leader when required or directed.
Requirements

(1) Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of: and thorough understanding of road construction, maintenance and work zone traffic control; operating basic heavy equipment, assorted light equipment and trucks; principles and processes for providing excellent customer service, including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
Skilled in: operating basic heavy equipment, assorted light equipment and trucks; maintenance of a variety of equipment.
Ability to: operate basic heavy equipment, assorted light equipment and trucks; provide day-to-day maintenance of equipment; ability to work under minimal supervision; communicate effectively in writing and verbally; establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with co-workers, other county departments, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and the public.
(2) Experience/Education: High school diploma or equivalent; proven work experience as a heavy equipment operator for the construction and maintenance of roads; supervisory experience is preferred; any acceptable combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.
(3) Visual Acuity/Hearing/Speaking: Must be able to write and read; able to hear and see.
(4) Physical Effort/Dexterity: Must be in good physical condition with the ability to lift and carry 80 pounds. Must be able to use a variety of hand tools.
(5) Environmental Factors: Must be able to work under adverse conditions for extended periods of time. Such conditions will include dirt, noise, rain, snow and extremes of temperatures.
(6) Work Schedule/Characteristics: 40 hours per week. Varied work schedules are required during certain weather conditions.
(7) License/Certification Requirements: Possession of and ability to maintain a valid Colorado Commercial Driver’s License Class A without restrictions; may require special license endorsements.
